ever heard of them?? I just got this in my Flickr inbox
    Hi Paul,

I am writing to let you know that one of your photos has been short-listed for inclusion in the second edition of our Schmap Ireland Guide, to be published late March 2008.

    www.schmap.com/shortlist/p=13081474N00/c=SG3109160

Clicking this link will take you to a page where you can:
    i) See which of your photos has been short-listed.
ii) Submit or withdraw your photo from our final selection phase.
iii) Learn how we credit photos in our Schmap Guides.
iv) Browse the first edition of our Schmap Ireland Guide.

While we offer no payment for publication, many photographers are pleased to submit their photos, as Schmap Guides give their work recognition and wide exposure, and are free of charge to readers. Photos are published at a maximum width of 150 pixels, are clearly attributed, and link to high-resolution originals at Flickr.

Our submission deadline is Sunday, March 9. If you happen to be reading this message after this date, please still click on the link above (our Schmap Guides are updated frequently - photos submitted after this deadline will be considered for later releases).

    Best regards,

    Emma Williams,
    Managing Editor, Schmap Guides

I'm inclined to accept it as it's an oldish photo and this is probably the only publicity it will ever get :D

Yeah, they came to me when they were starting up. Wanted some photos that I think are rubbish. I checked out the T&Cs and it seemed to say the owner retains all copyright and they can't make dough from the photos.

I think that's the deal. I found them of little use publicity-wise.

actually just having a look at their Dublin photos and I see there are some Boardsies photos already there...

I didn't meant that I expect to get loads and loads of publicity from it, just that it's buried on the last page of my flickr, so will probably get a few more views...

and yes, some pf the photos they have chosen are pretty crappy!!

I get emails off them every so often looking for photos. If I dont think the photos they've requested are likely to receive any attention elsewhere I'll normal submit them.

Yeah they emailed me for some of my Parc Guell photos (in Barcelona) ..

and they weren't even that good !

I received a request today also. The licence they're looking for is mostly unobjectionable, though I did have some reservations about the choice of law / choice of forum clause, and the fact that the key restriction (limiting size of thumbnail to 150x150) wasn't included in the licence itself but merely in the email / web page. There was also some ambiguity as to whether they could use your photos in the event that they moved to a subscription (as opposed to ad-supported) service. As usual, this is not legal advice for your particular situation.

Thanks All. I submitted it anyway, sure no harm...

+1... Normally the shots I've submitted are holiday snaps and nothing particularly interesting, or anything that I'd worry too much about. Nice to contribute to these online places too... it makes it easier on them.

They should really research better, according to them Newgrange is in Kimmage now

Yep, i got one of my photos shortlisted too - and like most of you others it's fairly old and a pretty average kinda photo. Still, I'm happy enough to let them use it, if nothing else might get a few more people to see my stuff.

Or maybe this is it! This is the first step on the rung of international fame and fortune! I'm going to be famous! YAY! Look out Baz, i'm coming for ya!

Nurse, what are you doing with that syringe?

Got a couple of photos on the site. Even though none of them were taken in Galway since I've never been there and they used them to promote the County.

Yep got one in January, I think it was for a totally average shot of the Old Head of Kinsale.. Said yes and it was accepted. I havent noticed a massive link of viewers coming from their site to my flickr.

Yeah, I gave them a picture last year.

This is more widespread than I thought...

Gave them one I took in San Francisco. I was just happy that *someone* appreciated the picture. :P

they're just harvesting free pics from people who aren't too bothered about the money; grand business idea, i suppose. their Ts&Cs are fair enough, given the premise.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,889 ✭✭✭Third_Echelon

Yeah, they asked me a few months ago to use some of my pics from Dublin and Philadelphia. As most of you have mentioned, they aren't particularly spectacular shots, but more touristy shots. The one of Dublin they used of mine was for the 'Temple Bar Music Centre' as it was then called..

Me too.. a slightly uninspired pic of Castletown House in Celbridge.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,182 ✭✭✭Beef

Aye, me too - a fairly average shot of the Torc waterfall is what they wanted from me. There were much better ones there from other people - I wonder if everyone with a shot of a certain place is contacted...?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,464 ✭✭✭evilhomer

I got contacted too, picture of a squirrel in Dublin Zoo.
The only relation to Dublin zoo you can take from the photo is the title of the photo.

I suspect they compile a list of locations they want to have and then simply harvest a list of user names that have photos of the locations they want to add.

Quality control probably comes after they have gotten your permission.

    I'm still undecided.

I got a mail from them too for a very average picture of the round tower in glasnevin.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,081 ✭✭✭sheesh

got one too into my flickr account. It mentioned the Grand canal in the title so I think it has more to do with that rather than anything else as the pic was not the best. kind of annoying more than anything else.

They asked for one of mine a good while ago (a year or more). I obliged, chuckling to myself that the photograph contained 2 junkies after shooting up, drinking a bottle of cheap whiskey, falling around...

Just checked there, they've taken it down.

Must have looked at the higher res version :D
