Nitro Onroad Racing Season gets underway

This Sunday, March 9th, the Irish Nitro Onroad racing season gets underway with Round 1 of the ORCA Club Championship at the St. Annes track in Raheny. With the prospects of 30 plus drivers attending races in 2008 the scene is set for one of the best seasons yet in this country.

Racing will cater for 1:10 200mm Touring Cars and 1:8 265mm classes with owners of 1:10 pullstart cars also welcome to come along and race. The Pullstart class proved very popular last year and has resulted in a number of drivers progressing to full blown competition cars for this season.

If you own a nitro touring car but feel a little intimidated by the prospects of racing it just remember that we were all novices at one time. The ORCA club is always delighted to welcome new members and there is plenty of support from fellow racers on race day to help you find your feet in the sport.

Registration on the day is open from 09:00 to 10:00. With free practice from 10:00 to 11:00 followed by the first round of qualifying heats. A drivers briefing on race morning will explain the format for the day.

Oisin good to hear about 1:10 on-road kicking off again down in St Annes and glad to hear the track has been repaired and racable. You make a good point about the pull start class - this is where most people start and to be honest a lot of branded cars out of the box (RTR's) these days are high quality and well fit to race - all we need is a cost effective, reliable support network & spares available when you need them.

We would like to wish St Annes and ORCA a productive and sucessfull year on-road. In addition we'd like to invite all drivers interested in off-road to visit us here in Navan (www.nnn.ie) - our track is now pretty much complete and we've had the best drivers in the country (both North & South) check it out and race competatively down here. This summer we will host two of the four 1:8 scale National Off-Road Championship Race Days (with BADMCC (http://www.badmcc.com/) & GMCC (http://www.modelworld.tv/clubmodelworld/galwaymodelcarclub/) hosting the other two). Darren & Co. we are looking forward to a new track down in Galway this year (the bearings in me wellies never recovered from last year (ha, ha) - that table top looks serious Bernd - we'll see you on the FAR SIDE.

We want to wish all Irish entries going over to the biggest international off-road buggy event happening over the Easter weekend in England (http://www.neo08.net/information.php) - we have 3 lads (including our good friend (& NNN club member) Oisin) travelling over and representing themselves and hopefully flying Navan Nitro Nuts banner (although I know Oisin has a few more banners to fly). Best of luck to Davy Curtis & Michael Monaghan & to the lads up North (Barkley & Co.) who will be hoping to take some glory back aross the Irish sea.

This Sunday in BADMCC the final round of their Winter Championship will kick off at 9am and it should be a fantastic days racing (and seriously competative). Good luck again to Davy, Micky & Cathal Taffee who will be flying the NNN flag (I'm most likely grounded this weekend in Navan building up brownie points for Neo Buggy!).

NNN host the final round of our Winter Championship end of April - date will most likely be pushed out to April 20th to give everyone some breathing space after Neo Buggy & BADMCC finals. Hoping to see as many there as possible - again it should prove to be a fantastic & competative days racing.

Keep up the hard work all over the country at building up the hobby and sport that is Radio Controlled Racing. I know of new off-road clubs being considered in Fermoy, Limerick & Longford and wish them all the best. We are looking forward to supporting electric off-road at our track this year and hope to offer an opportunity to these drivers that hasn't existed before (thanks to the Irish weather) with a consistent, dry astro turf track. Thanks to Mick & Dave Bolger for all their support while we were setting up and now anything we can do to help you just ask.

    That's it for NOW>>>>
    Enda.

Best wishes to everyone that is travelling nationwide and to the UK Racing over the easter period.
I think all this hard work and group involvement can bring this sport to the next level if we all stick together as we are.

    As for the Fermoy Track.!
The wheels should be in motion within the next couple of weeks .
@ Enda. or Darren & Co.
If you have any suggestions as to design of our new track we would more than welcome them as you lot are more familiar with how they should look.
Maybe you could pop onto our forum from time to time with suggestion or if you need area measuremnts for our proposed track it would also be great. ;)

Personally I tend to stick with the onroad as much as possible but will give a hand where I possibly can with the new track

    Regards

Guys i was just wondering with regards to the nitro off-road buggies , the 3 tracks you race on do vary in the surface for each track , can you tell me are there different tires you can recommend for each track or is the just one type that suits all. I ask because i just got a hyper 8.5 and am looking to be prepared to race during the year.

    Hi Mugenextreme,
Great to hear you are going to take the Hyper racing.

All three tracks would be quite different.

Navan is laid out completely in astro turf, Banbridge is a mixture of both astro sturf & clay while Galway is completely good old Irish earth.

Each of the clubs will be running their own championship races prior to the nationals so would be a good idea to enter one or two of them and get a feel for each track. It will also give you an idea of what tyres the quick guys are using on each surface.

    Regards,

    Oisin

Greetings Mugenextreme from Navan (www.nnn.ie) - you raise a valid point regarding which tyres/tires you should use in each track. As Oisin states all 3 tracks have a different type of top surface and to complicate matters more each top surface grip depends on the weather conditions!.

For example if all 3 tracks were nice & dry then something like Proline Crime Fighters would probably get you around all 3 with pretty good grip. When it gets a little slippy then HoBao Angle Spikes tend to dig in and provide that extra grip & less slide that you need. So that's my recommendation just to get you on the tracks and having fun. We could start into tire compounds and surface conditions but that comes from experience out there meeting up with the drivers and sharing information.

Look forward to seeing you down in Navan,

    Cheers,
    Enda.

sweet guys good to hear ORCA is still going strong, myself and johnny will proberbly make it back this season, but most likely in pullstart, is there any limitations in the pullstart class on engine size?? and do the pullstarts use the full track or have you guys cut into the track like you were thinking??
