Can't access internet yet connected

Dell laptop with a functionning wireless card. Definitely connected to network yet still can't connect to internet.
Amount of packets received was one after about 45 minutes while amount sent was only 23.
The only difficulty I can think of is that the computer is American (from Chicago to be specific) but it still runs XP and uses IE so that shouldn't really affect it.

Anyone have any ideas as to what I can do to get it up and running (I don't want to keep stealing other people's computers).

You might be connecting to another "open" wireless network.
Right click the Wireless network icon next to your time.
    Click View available wireless networks.
Make sure you are connecting to your wireless link.

Either you're not connected to the right network or your settings are screwed up. Check what buildabong suggested first.

Tried this. Still nothing. I even downloaded some info from Microsoft website, printed it out and worked through it but still nothing.
I'm going to keep trying but it's beyond an annoyance at this stage.

First of all varify that you are getting IP configuration settings.

Click start->Run. Type cmd click ok. In the black dos box that appears type ipconfig.

What is the IP Address and Router Gateway address?
