I am after some names of some decent hotels around the centre of london. This will be my first time visiting London, Hoping to head over for a long weekend in May just my wife and I, Mainly for shopping and maybe to see a show. We will be flying into Luton and getting a train in.

Whats the best area to try and look at staying?

Depends how much your budget is. You could pay well over £200 a night in some posh hotels in London

I like Earl's Court, lots of moderately priced hotels & B&B's as well as lots of shops, takeaways and tubes etc etc.

Check out http://www.londontown.com/hotelmap/ for interactive map that shows availability for your dates and helps you get your bearings.

I stayed in a lovely little hotel in Kensington. Really nice area with plenty of restaurants around and it's not too far from the city centre. It's also quite close to bus tours etc to do the touristy thing.
