Mac Mini to Dsiplay widescreen?

    Hello,
First time poster in the Mac forum and generally used to the windows world. I recently hooked up my mac mini to our family's Philips 26" tv, (model PHL 23PF9946,as detected by OS X)
My question is I can only get it to display in standard lettbox 4:£ ratio. Is there a way to force it to display in widescreen as I have gone through all the resolutions and they all stay 4:3 with black bands filling the widescreen gap.
Thanks for any help or input you guys have.

Have you tried changing the aspect ratio on your TV?

When I first tried connecting my MacMini to my Toshiba LCD TV, using a DVI-HDMI cable, I did not set the TV into what "PC" mode. Consequently, there was nothing on the screen, even after reboots (with PRAM reset). It is fine now, after MacOS "accidentally" showed a part of the desktop and I was able to set the resolution to the lowest before doing the right thing on the TV and re-doing the resolution setup on the MacMini.

Perhaps you have to do something similar to your TV. Are you using a DVI connection?

Theres no option on the tv for changing aspect ratio at all, it defaults to widescreen on regular tv channels but not when switched to the PC input. I'm using a standard Apple DVI-Vga adapter then a vga cable to the vga input on the television. Would love to get this working. Could display widescreen on my dell 24" fine without any hassle so this is perplexing me a bit.

    1024x768 is a 4:3 resoltuion
try settting it to the native resoltuion of your tv (1280 x 768)

I think his problem was that this resolution was not available to him in the preferences pane. Does the tv have a hdmi connector ? If so I'd recommend using a DVI-HDMI adopter and a HDMI lead to the tv.

I had major problems recently with a 42" Samsung LCD set that only "announced" itself as a 1280x720 to the Mac so the result was this resolution stretched to fill the "real" resolution which was 1377x768. Ok from a distance but fuzzy up close.

If you search around there are patches and apps available to fix display timing issues like these.
