    Hi,
I'm 23 and I am thinking of getting a bike this year.

I like the 250 and got a quote for under 700 to insure. When I was filling out the form I said I had an A driving licence but I don't.

What's involved in getting on of these. I do have a full licence for driving a car on the road. Cheers.

Also is there somewhere I can get motorbike training in the west.

Erm, doing a driving test. You'll possibly need to do the theory test to get a provisional, wait at least 6 months before taking test and hope you pass. A B licence is irrelevant in all respects.

You might want to rethink your choice of bike. The CBR250 puts out 40bhp which is more you are allowed on a provisional licence.

Also they are a nasty piece of kit if something goes wrong. 16 valves in an engine as complicated and as small as a Swiss watch! A Honda Bros is a better choice if you can get a clean one. .

Why is it that around this time every bloody year we have torrents of threads asking the same questions about getting a bike / bike licence.

There is a FAQ at the top of this Forum explaining everything you need to know.

So it's my understanding now that I can get a prov and then apply for the main test in 6 months.

If this it the case it might be next year before I get the bike inwhich I will also have my full licence by then.

But just after reading here now it's says I will be restriced to 34BHP for the first two years even with full licence. Is that correct?
    http://www.msa-ireland.com/licenses.htm

"The ‘A’ is Learner Permit from 18 years of age for motorcycles, with or without a sidecar, subject to a power limit before the Driving Test and for 2 years afterwards of 25Kw/34bhp. or a power to weight ratio of less than 0.16kW per kg) – the restriction continuing for two years after taking out a full licence in that category."

If so is it costly to get a 250CC bike limited?

Where can I go to get the application form for the provisional?

had a cbr250 last year, no problem insuring it provo licence, did test on it in galway. you should be able to pick up a decent one for about €1k. try Comfort Driving in galway for decent pre test lessons.

Surely it must have been limited then to 34BHP or lower....No?

Not up to the insurance company to make you comply with the requirements of your license. Probably suits them that you're riding a bike you dont have a license for, as it gives them a get out clause
