As in the subject, curious if DTT in the Republic will have BBC etc along with the RTEs etc :)
Also, will it be in Q4 when DTT is launched for the general public?

    Cheers,
    Kerb

No, there is no sponsor out there who is willing to overtake broadcasting costs and licence fees.
Maybe scrambled and for a monthly fee at one of the commercial muxes next year. Maybe not.

The only thing sure about DTT is that it will have RTE1, RTE2, TV3, TG4.
There are no plans yet for ANY other channels.

Of course without FTA BBC/ITV/C4, take up by the 900,000 Sky/UPC customers will be low, and by the rest not much higher.

Who outside of cable areas will pay for TV that can get with a dish for free?

FTA satellite users may be the main adopters of DTT for the 4 free Irish channels with increased demand of dual mode DTT/Sat receivers/PVRs.

The trial may currently have BBC 3/4 and CBBC/CBeebies, but this is should not be used as indication as to whether or not any BBC channels will appear at the launch to the general public.

This may have been discussed on here before, so if it has I apologise in advance.

The BBC & ITV are about to launch their Freesat service (sometime in the Spring), which will also have their HD channels.

Channel 4's channels (including Channel 4 HD) are expected to join later in 2008 when their encryption deal with Sky comes to an end (in July I think).

This service is intended to duplicate the UK's Freeview service on satellite and the price in the UK is expected to be below £100. I imagine this will be very popular in Ireland when it launches.

IMHO, a combination of Freesat and DTT will suffice for many Irish viewers.

All the channels are available freely now so no need to wait if you already have a FTA box pointing at the right satellite. Granted you wont have everything like digital text but all channels are there. If a HD box comes in at under £100 I will be very happy.

Quote from todays Sunday Business Post.

"RTE has held talks with a number of parties with regard to joint ventures for the operation of the DTT platform. While RTE will be free-to-air on DTT, it looks increasingly likely that there will be a modest charge to access British channels."

a modest charge.. that could be anything from 50 euro to 120.. and how would it work? anyway anyone that has satelitte will have the uk channels free by the time it comes around to a full working model hopefully. I cant see much being prepared to pay for it if thats the case.
as watty said most will just use it to get rte and tv3 in digital and the sat will do for bbc itv

Cheers for the info lads - I have everything crossed that the UK 4 are on the service in the Rep. even if I have to pay a small sub, I wouldn't have any problem with that to be honest
