It must be 30 years or over to be taxed as a vintage vehicle. Although over 20 qualifies it for vintage insurance  Tax is about 30 Euro. If you car is younger than 30 then the tax is the same as it would be on an everyday car. So a 1976 6 Litre Jensen interceptor would now only e30 while three years ago it would have cost you a mortgage to tax!!

For insurance purposes they consider 20 years (i think)

Not quite. For classic tax, the car has to be 30 years old. For classic insurance, it depends on the car, but it could be a lot less than 30 years old. My 22 year old car is on classic insurance and I've heard about early 90s Mazda MX-5 being considered a classic!

Anyway, moved to the Classic Car forum where many experienced people will be able to give you sound advice

30 for tax, generally 20 years for insurance, which is good!!:D

In that case, my Micra will be eligible for classic insurance in 2 years time!

The only problem is they will probably want you to have another daily driver to insure it under.

Tax is now in the high forties.....NCT exempt over 30 yrs old and you cna negotiate a bit with Insurance Companies over what is Classic and what isnt...

It amazes me how we got away with the NCT exemption here, how they didnt follow england and make it mandatory for every car regardless of age, particularly with how older cars are with rust and such.

I think its a matter of administration, you'd have to have massive tables of say emissions, covering every conceivable model and make of car for over a hundred years also braking figures, and a whole slew of other stuff. Could you imagine checking headlight alignment on a 1904 Rolls Royce with oil lamps, revving mint condition museum examples etc. It would be a disaster.

    But Shhhhhhh!
