I've never really asked for C&C before here ... on this occasion I working on an idea which I can develop as part of my day job which involves a lot of travels ... and the inevitable hotel stays ... this is my very first output from the project -

Keep passing the open windows ...

I'd rather not explain too much what it is about because I want the project to speak for itself in images ... for the most part at least, there is a preamble at the beginning of the set in flickr ... and each image has a caption.

For those of you familair with the concept of photo-documentary (and ideally are postively disposed towards it as a concept) ... I'd be particularly interested in opinions.

Constructive criticism welcome ... does it work as an idea ? ... if so/not then why? ... can it be improved ?

EDIT: Credit goes to Fajitas for the Ligthroom action I'm using to process the images

I think the concept works big time - in fact its quite brilliant. I'm not sure if you 'borrowed' it from somewhere but i think it is a wonderful documentary of what will be a significant part of your life. It presents a 'glimpse' of your trails throughout the world. Not sure about offering C&C though. I think the images are what they are and to alter them as a result of someone's C&C might be counter productive to what you are trying to document. Plus I don't think the question you are getting at is 'how to take a better picture through a hotel room window'? Anyhow I think its a great project and wish you well with it. Good luck with the travels too - keep safe. Cheers.

I really like the concept, its a nice way of bloggering your way around the world without actually writing to much and gives an interesting insight into where you've been

Thanks for the encouragement ... it is a little off my usual ... so if I'm being honest I'm a little unsure of myself with the whole concept ...

I was getting a bit bored of trying to shoot works of art and composition and failing miserably every time ... so I figured I'd try something different just for the hell of it ...

In an odd sort of a way I did borrow or rather was inspired by Martin Parr ... I studied his work as part of my Photography course at NCAD ... he has a body of work dealing with the last parking space in town ...

    Last Parking Space

I've always liked the bold simpicity of this work ... I think it is a brave subject to tackle ... I've heard it dismissed as a load of photos of empty parking spaces ... but for me it is an intelligent treatment of every day life which I find very appealing ...

In my case parking spaces are replaced by hotel windows ... this is everyday life for me ... I get to go to great places ... but most of the time the only thing I get to see is a fleeting glance ... through the window of a hotel ... a taxi ... a meeting room ... or a conference centre ... all of which are bland, colourless places ...

I like the concept and I like the work you have done to date on it.

    Stick with it.

Ooo I really like that. I think its a great idea, the shots are spot on for what you're tring to portray and the processing looks fantastic.. the Las Vegas one in particular...

Is there a PS version of the lightroom action? I've been trying to emulate that feel for a college project I'm working on.

I don't know TBH ... but I'm sure we can sort something out for you ... Fajitas may be your best person to discuss how to re-create the action in CSx

Galway window is my second fave.. I like the perspective & tones.
    Very well done!!

Really nice set. I didn't quite know what to make of it at first but after viewing the set on black I really loved the mood they bring across.

Thanks everyone for the encouragement ...

There is a few more coming up ... I'll be staying in Galway this coming week (same hotel as the one where the Wedding mag photo was taken) ... and next week I'm off to Charlotte in North Carolina ... so more hotels to play with ... there is not time to think about the right conditions of light and weather ... you kind of just need to work with what you get on the day ... but then again that is part of the point of the project ... capturing a moment good or bad ...

I like this a lot and like the Las Vegas one I commented on (hopefully All will post up the details of the action :) )

I wonder if whilst taking the pictures out the window for this set you should do another set where you take one from the window with a wide angle looking into the room as a separate set which over time will demonstrate the blandness and sameness of hotel rooms

Great idea Simon, nice to see something out the box so to speak and look forward to seeing more of them in the up and coming months.

Just got around to looking at your new "project".

If your first 4 shots are anything to go by I think it's going to be great.
    Keep 'em coming.
