    Goto www.memoryc.com
In the top tight hand corner is the memory configurator, select Dell, the your XPS M1710 model and it will show you the compaitible ram for it , along with the price.

    Here , Done for you
    http://www.memoryc.com/DELL/Inspiron/Inspiron-XPS-M1710.html
The Mhz number is the speed at which the ram operates.
Edit. the 944mhz you mention , did you get that from the Systme Properties tab on your laptop? Thats refering to the current CPU speed you laptop was running at, it is a low number as the speed is increased and decreased depending on load on the machine.

No thats fine, its called processor throttling, if the machine is under stress like playing a game etc the processor runs at full power, but when its idling (as it was when you checked the system properties) it'll be down around that 900~mhz mark.
