    Yikes!

    from rte.ie/news
Three men have been arrested following the discovery of a number of devices at an apartment block in Tralee this evening.

It is believed the devices may be components for explosives.

This has not been confirmed and they have not as yet been examined.

It is understood that gardaí were acting on intelligence when they went to search the Atlas House complex at McCowen's Lane in Tralee this evening.

Atlas House is used as a hostel for asylum seekers and foreign nationals. Gardaí sealed off one of the apartments after a number of devices were found.

The three men, who are believed to be from Afghanistan, were arrested.

They are being detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act and can be held for up to three days.

All three are aged in their 30s and 40s and it is believed that at least one of them has come to garda attention since his arrival in this country.

A team from the Garda Technical Bureau in Dublin is expected to arrive in Tralee before midnight to begin an examination of the devices and the apartment where they were found.

    Whaddymean sensational headline? ;)

    Mike.

Bet they were going to booby-trap Jackie Healy-Rae, and demand that the government cede the Blaskets to them as the new Promised Land for the Afghan people.

I'm surprised we haven't had a terrorist attack yet, similar to what happened in London. A country cannot remain neutral yet allow hundreds of thousands of troops be transported thru its airports.

It would have got colossal worldwide coverage had it gone off, Ireland being a European nation with virtually no involvement in Iraq and no history of being anti-Islam

At the risk of being Mr Obvious here, but these guys are Afghani, and Ireland has troops in Afghanistan. Numbers vary, usually less than thirty (I think it's a half-dozen right now), but they're there.

However, I think it's most likely that assuming they are indeed terrorists, they were just using Ireland as a base in which to prepare to attack a British target. At worst, they just picked the 'enemy religion', Ireland being quite a noted Catholic country.

Shannon is a major staging point for the US military, so how does this support "virtually no involvement?" The US military should be denied access to Ireland.

not defending these guys but they just mentioned remote control devices... no exposive material found, now how many people have bomb making devices in the house(otherwise known as remote control car controllers and mobile phones)

we all got bomb making devices in our houses.

One thing that has always mystified me is why we even let them use Shannon. The US could just as easily do their refuelling and transferring in a UK airport surely.

Yes, but its not as if a plane cant fly from the US to the UK without refuelling is it.

And dont they have a base in the Azores, off Portugal? Seems to me we are just letting them use it to kiss arse rather than any necessity.Do soldiers spending a few hours in Shannon really contribute much to the local economy?

Oh I wasn't referring to the shannon thing, it was more of a joke about how these people get into the country, or sarcasm.

Regarding shannon, totally against it and as you said, it's purely just so Bertie & Co can kiss GWB's redneck arse.

pfft, thats what their big fancy ad says.

In reality the 5 euro return only takes you to Jalalabad, its a 3 hour poxy train journey up the Khyber to Kabul itself.

One thing that has always mystified me is why we even let them use Shannon.

Three reasons. One is the obvious, funding. The military-related flights are the difference between profit and loss for the airport in recent years (We also spend a fair bit in Duty Free). The second was that the Soviets in the cold war needed a staging point to refuel on the way to Cuba, and for obvious reasons the UK or Iceland were out. Obviously Ireland's non-aligned policy required equal access to all comers. That started the tradition of the use of Shannon as a stopping point by military aircraft, you could see Soviet and USAF aircraft parked on the same ramp during the Cold War. This 'open access' policy is still in effect: Everyone focuses on the US, but many countries stop at Shannon.
The final reason is related to the first: Several commercial carriers had chosen Shannon as a base for business reasons. These carriers now charter to, amongst other customers, the US military. It's not cost-effective for these carriers to have multiple bases in Europe depending on cargo, so if they're forced out of Ireland for the US military charters, they'll also re-locate for the non-US military charters as well, and take Shannon's business elsewhere. At least one airline (ATA?) has already abandoned all its Shannon operations for Germany after those incidents with airport security being breached by people with hatchets.

Three Afghan men released, Tralee devices not malicious
    01/03/2008 - 18:17:23

Three Afghan men arrested in Co Kerry today on suspicion of terrorist activity have been released without charge.

A team of 20 gardaí raided an apartment at Atlas House in Tralee at around 6.30pm last night on intelligence from the Special Branch.

They recovered equipment including electrical devices and remote controls.

Gardaí removed the materials to Garda Headquarters in Dublin for technical examination.

However, it is now understood the materials are not malicious.

Probably some goon saw they were arabs and had electrical equipment, so they must be making bombs.
