You want a wireless router then. Does the laptop have a WiFi adapter?

The router you have might have some free ports which you could connect up to a wireless router. if you don't you'll need a router but don't know about that. i'd recommend getting an apple airport of ebay check them out on.

someone told me i would need a wireless connector with a free "dongle"
    what dose that mean?

The dongle is probably a USB wireless yoke, if theres built in wireless on the laptop you wont need the dongle.

Any idea what standard it supports? Something like 802.11x where x is a letter marking the version?

Then you can easily buy one, most likely you'll need either a PCMCIA or Expresscard version or an external dongle.

one of these badboys shud sort u out, and conect to the wireless router no prob... i only got one off off ebay there for a 10er incl shippin, works aok with an old laptop i have here

sometimes the usb dongles can stick out a little bit on the laptops which can be awkward and is asking for trouble + takes up an usb port too

Wireless ranges are slightly restricted by region i.e. North America has 11 channels, the EU has 13. Any European one should be fine, most allow region selection anyway.
