    Am going to be doing my direct access test here in the UK in the next couple of weeks...will then be in the market for a new bike...Last time I was on a bike in anger was abut 15 years ago (a tzr125).I'm completely out of the loop. Want to get something around the 5 or 600cc mark, preferably a street or trail bike.

    What bike, if any, would you guys recommend?

    bandit, hornet, fazer, gsr600, ducati monster, z750, street triple

    are the main street choices in that segment (may have missed a couple, sorry), all great bikes in their own right, worthwhile lookin for actual user opinions on the ones you like the look of :)

    dunno enough bout trailies to name any, sorry!

    For trailie's you've got some nice options:

    * Transalp
    * Africa Twin
    * BMW F650GS (new twin engine)
    * KTM do trailies but they're 990cc

    I'd add DL650 V-Strom

    just watch you don't lock the rear on high compression twins. Take your time getting used to them as they're a bit different to in line fours and TZR. They're alot of bike for a novice but handled with sense you shouldn't have a problem.
