Hoegarden...and lime?!?!

I was in a French restaurant in New York last week and ordered a Hoegarden beer. When it arrived, it had a chunk of lime sitting in the top of the bottle in the same manner as you would expect for corona or Sol.

Is this normal? It was the first time I ordered Hoegarden in a bar, normally I drink it at home. It tasted...citrusy, unsurprisingly!

Jesus. I'd have sent it back, tbh. You'd want some lime to mask the taste of inferior beers, such as Corona. I don't understand why someone would put lime in a Hoegaarden?

Having Hoegaarden served to you in the bottle is not normal, regardless of the fruit accompaniments. Sticking the lime in the neck is presumably just copied, idiotically, from the '80s Mexican beer craze you mention.

That said, good ol' InBev make a extra special lemony version of Hoegaarden -- Hoegaarden Citron -- at all of 3% ABV. And presumably because that was deemed insufficiently girly you can also get raspberry-flavoured Hoegaarden Rosé.

There's no way you can adulterate Hoegaarden that the people who brew it can't do worse.

It's not entirely uncommon, some people like their wheat beer with lime. I haven't tried it with Hoegaarden (nor would I), but it wasn't all that bad when I had it with some German wheat beer. I must say I'd very much rather drink the beer without the lime, though.

I worked in a pub in Scotland that served Hoegarden on draft. We were told we had to put lemon in it to bring out the flavour. Some of the punters were not happy though.

With out the lime, there are coriander seeds and orange peel which will gives that citrus aroma, the line will over power it and the oils ruins head retention.

Not sure what the official rules are. But i know when i got pints of hoegarden in holland, they came with lemon in the glass. Personally, i'd of been happier without

Biére blanche is typically served with lemon. Personally I like it.
However, although another citrus fruit, I'm not sure if lime is a proper substitute for lemon. Also it should definetly be served in a glass.

They know their microbrews here in Seattle. I think we're highest per capita beer drinkers in the US. Anyway - I've grown quite partial to Pyramid Hefe Weizen and it's served everywhere with a lemon and I have to say I prefer it that way. I have a case of it in the garage and I always keep the lemons on standby.

And rightly so! were there any other fruits or vegetables you were told to add to peoples drinks without them asking? Slice of strawberry in a guinness perhaps? crazy stuff

There are no rules, the only rule should be not to add anything unless asked. If you think they might want it, ask, goes for lemon or ice in spirits too.
