MGS4 pushing boundaries of blu-ray space?

Interesting story on Kotaku here supposedly MGS4 is going to fill a Blu-Ray disc to capacity, so much so that voice over tracks for different regions can't be included on the discs.

Wonder is this is a sign of things to come or just lazy development (as has been said on other threads which have talked about game size increasing)?

surely lazy...if a game could fill a Blu-ray, 360 would be seriously struggling to compete.

It's probably all the voice data for cut scenes:D

I fail to see how it could be lazy, I can't picture any scenario where the devs would think "hmm, I can't be arsed filling up 9 gigs so I'm going to fill up 25 instead" :)

rather then it being lazy i would imagine it's to do with having higher quality sound output and the like. also, if MGS is as reported, there's probably thousands more textures then there was in MGS3

Yep, thats what they were saying a while ago. Uncompressed audio takes up a huge amount of space and even they were using a very high quality codec they would save a lot of space for minimal quality loss.

It would be a bit of a show off to use no codecs on a large amount of audio even if the space is there.

You might aswell put stuff into the space if its just there and unused but you couldn't call it "pushing boundaries of blu-ray space".

Forgive me if I'm wrong ,but if the game is written in such a way that you needed 50GB of it to play it.

Would that not make it harder to pirate the game ?

    ^^^^
Although is currently no way of playing copied games on the Ps3 , 50gb download would certainly put people off downloading it if a way became available

its to do with data transfer to minimise loading times

apparently rfom was quite close to filling a bluray purely because of the way the devs handled textures

they found that if they pulled the texture from the same place off the disc as is normal procedure it ran into issues because the bluray wasnt fast enough to handle it, so they came up with a workaround to use every texture every time its needed from an individual location

so basically instead of having the texture there once for every time its needed, its there every time its needed, massively eating up space on the disc

which seems massively pointless when flac will do the job fine

doesn't someone own the rights to the FLAC codec? If the game is goin to run over 25GB anyways(maybe it would have, There is probably going to be hours of HD cut scenes ) why pay someone for there codec when your just going to be half filling the second layer of the BR disc anyways

    flac is open source

It's quicker to process raw audio files than compressed ones (although, it wouldn't be that much of a difference)

i dunno the details of it but ive actually read the opposite about certain file types, that compressed ones can be handled quicker

something to do with a file size/decompression trade off

I was half asleep in lecture last week but i'm pretty sure i heard something about if you use open source code in your code, that your code needs to become open source.... i might have been dreaming though(and if thats what i'm dreaming about i have issues!)

Doesn't really matter either way, they would of had access any codec they wanted. Its not like they're a small dev.

Audiophiles - and Hideo Kojima probably considers himself one - probably wouldn't say compressed audio is the same quality as uncompressed. It's probably 7.1 channels too, if that makes any difference.

Even still, I don't think it'd be the first PS3 game to use uncompressed 7.1 audio..but MGS4 probably has more than the usual.

hideo said bluray wasnt enough and they had to compress some of it lol

dont forget when the time MGS2 came out!now when you look back, you will know that's like using 90% of ps2 max performance already!

Kojima is seriously pushing the console 's limit!cant wait when it is released!

That's only if you use code that is licenced under the GNU licence. And even then I think it's only if you use the raw source and link to it statically. Flac is licenced under a combination of the BSD and GnU licence similar to OGG. The OGG codec is frequently used in games.

    yeah, massive difference

if they were running hd sound you might be looking at 192k wavs per channel which will run you about 60megs per minute PER CHANNEL
