Payment of VAT without invoice

Hi. i'm new to this and hope i'm posting in right location. anyhow, i have a query.

i carry out building work and i'm vat registered and use subcontractors to carry out some work who are also vat registered. i've issued a few cheques to one of my subcontractors without getting an invoice from him. he is vat registered and has given me invoices before. now though i've just discovered i've made a few payments to him and included vat but i never got an invoice from him. have i done something stupid? i still owe him some more money for works he done recently and this equates to about €1,000 less than the vat i paid him without any invoices. he says he's going to give me invoices for the payments i made him but i won't be paying him anymore money until i receive this. is what i've done totally stupid or is he obliged to issue me with invoices for what i've paid him. some of the payments made go back a couple of years.

    any advice welcome thanks.

Nothing stupid. Just demand an invoice fom him for the work up to date.

Keep your own house in order. Filing your own, correct vat return is all you need to worry about. If this guy wants to screw about with vat/invoicing, let him!

If i were you i would only pay him for what he invoices you. He would have an invoice for you fairly sharpish if this was the case.
I hope your deducting the 35% RCT Tax too:D
