I have the tokina, and have found it excellent. No problems whatsoever, very sharp images with it. I've never used the sigma, but I was in your position buying the tokina, and tried both out in the shop, I much preferred the feel of the tokina (the sigma felt far less smooth when zooming) and the shop assistant said the tokina was a far better lens really. Definitely try both out in the shop before you buy though, regardless of what you decide after hearing people's responses here.

Also, I *think* the Tokina can be used on crop sensors as well as full frame sensors, so its a good investment if in the future you might change to a full frame sensor?

Definitely a good option for the future Pete, EDIT just had a look on the Tokina site and the 12-24 is for crop only

    thanks all
Pete, the tokina one is also a DX, confirmed
The all-new AT-X 124 AF PRO DX lens is Tokina’s first lens designed for use exclusively on Canon and Nikon Digital SLR cameras having an APS-C sized sensor.

This lens gives the Digital Photographer an ultra wide-angle zoom lens that has the equivalent of an 18-36mm zoom range on a 35mm
film camera while maintaining a bright constant aperture of f/4

+1 vote for the sigma, i love it.

Flickr set here if you want to have a look: http://www.flickr.com/photos/arciphel/sets/72157603227751622/

Don't trust everything a salesman tells you, they get less profiit margin off a Sigma than a Tokina, and that affects what they will push to customers! :)

Cant remember Quilmore where you are located and whether you shoot Nikon.

If you are in Dublin and a Nikon user, I have the Tokina and could met up (say at City Hall or St Pats Cathedral) and you could try it out and see what you think. I only have it 2 weeks so havent used it much yet

    Isn't there a new Tamron 10-24 too?

Haven't used the Tokina but I love my Sigma 10-20 :)

I've never used the Sigma but I do have the Tokina and use it quite a lot. It's a superb lens, great IQ and build. All my shots from the gallery below where taken with the Tokina 12-24mm.

I'm bouncing between which one to buy as well at the moment.

in my research certainly Ken Rockwell recommends the Tokina over the Sigma in general.

I just checked up and I *think* it is the Sigma that can be used on both crop & FF sensors...if I'm wrong let me know, I don't want to be dishing out any more incorrect info!

Ren Kockwell also advises you to buy a Powershot A570 rather than a 5D. :o

and he has started doing very nice impartial ads for Tiffen filters lately, so i wouldn't call him impartial anymore. Try out both if possible and see which you like more!

Sorry Pete, but it's a DC lens, so digital only.

yes, Nikonian for about 2 decades and Dublin has been "my" city for almost 7 years now.
if I can hold the urge to buy the tokina tonight I’ll contact you to have a feel of it.
it will be my first non-Nikon lens in almost a decade, but I’ll be getting some 2.8 VR later in the year and the expense of buying the Nikon 12-24 I think won’t be justified.

The Sigma is a fine lens, though soft at the edges if you drop the aperture to 5.6.

Doesn't work on full-frame - I occasionally stick it on my 5D and get a huge black 'frame' around the image.

Sounds like either lens gives very good results.

I have the sigma lens and I have to say I'm not really satisfied with the quality. Soft lens.

Let's be honest....they are both very good lenses and optically there is very little between them. I have the Sigma (from Kea) and am quite happy with the results it gives me, although I've heard people say that optically the Tokina may just have the edge over the Sigma. Of course, if you had the dough, the Nikkor 12-24 beats them both (not by much though).
Regardless of the lens you pick, I reckon you'll be happy with the pics they can produce for you. Good luck with your lens shopping!

I've bough it! (the Tokina, thanks all)
after that sent an email to Albert (Kea)
    his reply was:
Sorry, you did not buy this lens at my shop (Kea Photo). You bought it from UR Galaxy. Please email them instead.

    Albert

LOL, I've messed them up :) , anyway no big damage, got an email from Hugo saying he'll ship it later today, happy days
I hope it comes before Paddy's day, I've applied for a press pass and I'm hoping on getting it
and if it can get here before the 8th much better, I think I have some group pictures to take in my local church

I have Sigma 10-20 Nikon mount. It works for me, altough I didn't have a chance to compare it to Tokina.

Sometimes I am using it with manual Nikon FM2 - it gives a cool frame.

Here's one my photos taken with Nikon D50 + Sigma 10-20

In this case, the frame is caused by polarizing filter
