40 GB inadequate?

Am I the only one who thinks that the 40 GB just isn't good enough? I'm willing to do without backwards compatibliity, but the memory just isn't sufficient. I shouldn't have to get another HDD for the console either! I think that the MGS4 bundle would be the perfect way to introduce the 80 GB model to Europe, I'd get one straight away.

Do you have a 360? Complain about the custom MS 20GB HDD.
40GB is plenty for PSN games and PS3 game installs. If you want to make it into a media centre, you can buy and add your own HDD unlike the 360.

    I don't see the problem.

2 digs at the 360 for no reason at all  Keep it on topic.

20gb in my PS3 does me fine, what are you doing with yours that needs so much space.

I'm pretty worried about running out of space. How big was that DMC4 install? If devs keep putting installs like that or Assassins Creed into games it'll fill up quick enough.

Get eyeConnect TVersity (or MediaRiver for Mac people like me) and stream your content. Free your HDD!

I have a 60GB PS3, with YDL installed on a 10GB partition. I also have an external 250GB, USB-powered HDD for my media. I only use the remaining 50GB for game installs, demoes and save files.

If you really want more space, you can just install a 2.5" 250GB HDD. They are not all that expense imo.

How easy is it to install?

Its incredibly easy to install , one screw to remove and you just pull it out , its in the manual. If 40GB is not enough just buy another , it takes about 10 minutes thats all.

HDD is not memory. 40GB or 80GB, the difference is not really significant when there are 500GB-1TB HHDs available. Haven't had need for more than my 60GB yet and I'm coming up on 1 year owning my PS3.

    HDD is not memory.
It can be, memory doesn't always refer to ram.

Perhaps when the person making the refernce is unfamiliar with the established terminology, yeah. ;)

40gb is hardly going to be plenty if more games start to abuse having a HDD as standard like DMC4 did...
I love the way that you can just throw a new HDD into it though

i was about to say this. though, right now, it seems that capcom are just lazy rather then working on a new trend of installing console games.

either way, you can upgrade your HDD at a later stage if you so wish

Going a bit off topic... but it's not hard to disassemble the 360s Hard Drive cradle.

I agree with Ongarite here. 40GB is more than enough unless you go about installing everything from the PSN store. Plus Sony have made it incredibly easy to install another hard drive AND it doesn't void the warranty.

Also you can install a USB drive so potentially you could have a PS3 with TERRABYTES of storage space. I don't see how Sony have messed up? It's up to the game developers to be more efficient.

waiting for Mr K's 'perfect console specs'

(if you think 40Gb is small - sit down and write a 40Gb document)

Think Sony have done pretty much everything that can be asked of them..

    Console with wifi and bluetooth
    media center
install custom os if you wish
    upgrade internal HD
    fit external HD
    Blu Ray
XMB which is being upgraded all the time

Short of the console playing itself what more do you want for the money? - think this is a case of you just cannot please everybody...

Probably a dumb question, but if you change the hard disk, how do you transfer the data that's already on it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,721 ✭✭✭Otacon

Copy it to USB and transfer it over after. Your Store downloads will nedd to be d/l again though.

There's a backup utility under system settings, which is probably easier than backing up things individually. I think it also backs up your DLC.

If you do install the second HDD does it void your warranty?

To be honest, it was the DMC4 install thing that made me start thinking about running out of space. My 360 20 GB was too small, as I tend to download loads of extra content for games. But at least the 360 doesn't have the installation issue. If it becomes standard practice, I can see the memory filling up quick. Am I the only one of who thinks the EU is drawing the short straw, having only one model to choose from?

Were Sony to bring out the 80GB model here you can bet it'd cost more than to go out buy the 40GB model and an external 40GB hard drive.

You're probably right, but the 80 GB model would still have the advantage of (limited) backwards compatibility. Unless they removed that for the PAL models!

No, of course he doesn't, that's somebody elses gamertag in his signature!!! Grow up.

I can also see 40 GB becoming an issue down the line. Especially the way Capcom are going! If Lost Planet and DMC are getting an install, you can bet Resident Evil 5 will too. I think I could live with it however. What I'm waiting for is a console that ships with the Dualshock 3, then I'm off to the shops to give Sony my hard-earned! Until then, what's the point in buying a console with a redundant control pad?

I mentioned this in the MGS topic I started. If we got the bundle that they're getting in the states, Sony would have their most successful month of the year in PAL territories, fact!

Also, purely an aesthetic thing here, but I hate the look of an external HDD attached to my console...

Ongarite was making a very valid point. With the PS3 you can easily upgrade the HDD and without voiding your warranty, which you can't do with the XBox360.
I have two sixaxis controllers and like many PS3 owners I don't see myself rushing out to buy the Dualshock 3 or waiting and waiting for Sony to start shipping the console with it. Rumble
    whooppee.
You hate the look of an external HDD attached to your console. Fair enough, I, again like many other PS3 owners couldn't care less. I'll just hide the drive behind the PS3. Lots of content easily accesible from my PS3 - - -> Fantastic.

Why would you wait for sony to release a console you already have?

Also, if everybody felt the same way as you there'd be no Dualshock 3, now would there?

Point here is that I don't see any reason to buy a bundle that comes with redundant hardware!!

I want a PS3, but I want the right one!

Well that's a very good point but I didn't mean just me, I thought that would have been implied.
If everyone was like me there'd be no dualshock 3? Now that's a little bit of a silly statement. I would buy a dualshock 3, but I have 2 sixaxis controllers and I'm happy with them. I don't really feel the need to go buy something that rumbles. Were it just the one controller that I had, I'd buy a dualshock 3 in a heartbeat. I'm not alone in this regard. There are plenty of other PS3 owners, even on this forum who have said they won't be upgrading their controller because they are perfectly happy with their sixaxis.

I agree that there is no point in buying a piece of hardware with redundant hardware but sometimes it's just better to bite the bullet and go for it. How long will you have to wait for Sony to release the console with the DualShock 3 included? Myself, I'd prefer to be enjoying the console or any console for that matter now rather than waiting and waiting. There is always something better around the corner.

I was referring to your "Rumble
whooppee" comment. ie, that you didn't seem to care about rumble, if everybody felt that way it would be a case of if it ain't broke... for Sony.

I probably won't have to wait past MGS4s release for the DS3 in any case, and I can handle that wait! Games-wise, that's the first must-play on the console for me. I'd like the Bluray playing capabilities now though:D

Couple questions about installing a new hard drive:

Is there a way of uninstalling games?

Im presuming theres no way of transferring content from your old hard drive, demos, psn games etc? Do you loose your psn games or can you download em again?

Also, if your installing a new one, dont forget its the sata interface you want.

You can back them up to an external HD or Flash Drive, then change the internal HD and restore them to the new HD in the PS3. Go though the system settings, it gives you the options for backing up. You shouldn't lose anything doing it this way.
