Just wondering how long you need to be in a job before being entitled to Sick Pay?

I started a new job last October and was forced to miss tow days in Jan and one in February with sickness and I had all three deducted from my salary...

I would've thought I was entitled to sick pay for these days, no?

if its full time employment im pretty sure it shouldn't be deducted... should definately say in your contract... if you dont have a contract its very messy

Full-time, permanent position - I was very surprised and I do have a contract so will look into it.

    Thanks for the quick reply...

Did you call in sick correctly? with some places you need to ring a certain person by a certain time or the day will be taken from your annual leave

    Hi

There is no statutory law for sick pay, it is at the Company's own discretion. Normally they would stipulate their policy on it - either, as previous person said in your contract, or a staff handbook. Is there a HR person you can ask or a Manager? They should have clear set policy on it for all employees to see, to ensure equal employment rights. But if they don't pay it you can claim it back from social welfare. I'm sure there is someone who will set you straight in there. Good luck.

In my last job we had a 6 month proabation period and you didn't get paid for sick days during these 6 months. Do you have a similar probation period? if so, I'd say that's the case. You should get paid for sick days up to a maximum number a year. Again, check your contract.

I'm having a lot of trouble at work these days ... but sick pay is one of them .... it has gotten to the stage where it is now just ridiculous .. il give you a bit of background and you can tell me whats right and whats not!
last year i was taken ill in april .. i was in hospital for a week and got my full pay ... i went on holidays after that and got my full pay also .. we got paid for our christmas holidays three weeks before we broke up but the last week i got taken ill again and was brought into hospital so i was paid obviously!!!!
Since i came back in January my boss has been horrible to me, he barely speaks to me .. ive asked for a few days off (for interviews because i cant#'t hack it here anymore) and he has docked my wages, I've been to the doctor and was told to stay out of work on certs due to stress, i gave him the cert for the week and he didnt pay me at all ... even though i went in the last day of the cert (im not able to sit at home doing nothing)!!! So now i cant take sick days or holidays .. I am in this job now nearly four years! It is one rule for one and one for another!!!

In our company we are not paid for sick pay. This is very unfair as someone can geninley be very sick and unable to work yet cannot afford to take time off

You are not entitled to ANY pay what so ever, nada, zilch, zero from the company when you are sick. Anything beyond this is up to the company and would be outlined in the contract/employee handbook. Most companies would also include a maximum payment period for sickleave in a given time period (fixed or rolling).

If its not in your contract you don't get paid for sick days.

Do people not read their contracts?

By law you are entitled to a contract. If you don't have one, get one.

Leg to stand on with regard to what. Getting sick pay? No.

    Days off for interviews? Seriously?

You must be sick for 3 days for social welfare assistance.

Thats all you are entitled to.

You're not entitled to ANY sick pay, by law. Check your contract.

Whats all this about contracts????.....Contracts are not mandatory!!

What an employer is obliged to give staff is a contract or terms of employment.

I dont pay sickleave...but will consider individual circumstances. My feeling is that sickpay only encourages absentiesm. And guess what!!....I dont suffer from the one time Mondayitis that seemed to be rampant in our Company...in fact without having to calculate it my staff turn in probably 99.9% of the time. Id ask any employer who pays sickpay what thier rate of absence is...but id be confident that those who do pay sick pay have a higher rate than those who dont.

Take my sis-in-law,where she works they pay sickpay. She took 4 days off in Jan because of a sore toe!!! Why would she need to take this time off considering she sits at a desk all day?? the company my wife works for also pays for sick days...and theres been many a time where she just felt like ringing in sick...for no other reason than she just didnt feel like going in....but what with being married to me she didnt get away with it.

I'm on the fence on this. Because not paying it is great until until someone drags themselves in with the flu and half the office comes down with it. Or makes a mistake because they are in work when they shouldn't be. Which I've also seen happen. Usually when the pressure is on. Very easy to pull someone up for pulling sick days. often places require a cert for more than 2 days, or for a monday or a friday. Theres finite quota for certified and uncertified days and it can be withdrawn if abused.

How many sick days do y'all get?
I only get 5 a year! Yes, FIVE. Unfortunatey I got the winter vomiting bug in January and took 3 sick days, so I hope I don't get ill during the next...9 months.

I get about 4-5 weeks of certified paid sick leave. I only miss a few days a year. I'm on salary. People on hourly get 5 paid days (with cert) per year.

When i started my job it was in my contract stating the sick days i am entitled to

    0-6 months- Zero sick days
    6 months - 2 years - 5 days allowed
    Over 2 years- 5 years - 7 days allowed
    Over 5 years + -10 days allowed.

Its at the discetion of each company as to what they allow employess in terms of paid sick leave.

I don't mind it being at the discretion of the company but 5 days is so stingey - if you get sick once that's your sick leave pretty much gone for the rest of the year! And I am on a salary, not paid by the hour..

Places I worked before had no maximum paid sick days but if you were out more than 3 days you always had to have a doctors cert, and I remember one company I worked in said they could revoke your paid sick days if they thought you were abusing it.

    Which is fair enough!

Yeah, the place you get 2 days self certification. Sick days are paid.

I've never seen anything written down about time limit for sick leave where I work though. Was sick (back) within two months of starting, had a med note and was paid for it.
