Actually I've a question. For those people who bought a US iPhone and through *magic* have it working on O2 and Vodafone over in Ireland already, will it be possible to make the phone fully legit so to speak once O2 Ireland start carrying the phone?

Would you need one of the bundled sims or if you use an existing bill pay sim would it just switch plan on you?

Any UK people have experience of making US iPhones into O2 UK iPhones?

Thats not unexpected, it was the same in the UK that standard bill pay SIMs are not supported by the device.

might it be the case that a jailbreaked iPhone from the US, for example, could have full iPhone functionality on O2 once the iPhone is launched here?

so visual voicemail and all that?

so what's the craic with it? will we have to sign off on ridiculously expensive contracts and whatnot? will it be as easy to unlock these iPhones as US ones, etc. etc.?

Yeah seriously, only a Gig included? Everyone else offers unlimited data, i'm surprised that Apple didn't force it on O2 Ireland.

Now, the real question, should I hold out for a 3G version??

I was wondering the same, but production of apple products hasn't dropped much, and usually a few months before a new product unveiled/updated you'll see analysts reports about stock drops and paralleling this are competitions where you win ipods and the like to try and clear stock quicker i guess.

anyway i've not read anything, the rumor is that they have a 3g one in development but the battery life is terrible, which is expected. you cant get away with an everything in one device and have great battery life too. wel not yet.

my birthday is coming up soon so i might treat myself! :D

The T&C below the tariffs state "Data use in excess of the 1GB allowance will be charged at 2c per MB excluding roaming"

    not exactly groundbreaking..

Some 02 plans are unlimited, just not for this it seems. My BB plan is unlimited.

It might be worth mentioning these are introductory tariffs.. they probably are subject to change in a few months time, and more than likely will with customer demand.

But I'd assume customers who sign up now will be bound to the introductory tariffs above.

In other news, I <3 my iPhone! :D

LONDON (MarketWatch) -- German chipmaker Infineon Technologies AG (DE:623100 5.38, -0.04, -0.7%) (IFX:IFX 8.19, +0.04, +0.5%) will likely be supplying the new systems solution to Apple Inc.'s (AAPL 122.96, +3.81, +3.2%) next-generation iPhone, UBS analysts told clients in a note published Thursday.

The broker said this is not yet the consensus view and could be a positive catalyst for the stock. It also believes that 3G-enabled iPhones will be released by mid-year and that the current EDGE iPhone platform is being ramped down earlier than expected to "clean" inventories.

    The price plans are mad!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 490 ✭✭spidermonkey

presumably they will be available on the apple.com/ie store, as with the us store, so does that mean there might be a student discount of 10% on them too in the education store?

and no visual voicemail! presumably in the future? its not the biggest thing but its all part of the user experience.

O2 in Britain give 5 times the minutes and texts on each tariff, unlimited data, and visual voicemail, and all that with a handset price 13% below what O2 Ireland are offering.

They have visual voice mail on o2 UK so there should be no good reason why it can't be supported here and when you throw in the tarriff structure they're doing their best to discourage sales

Will it definitely be on sale on Apple's Irish store? I would assume so but it's not up there yet (for pre-order or 'Coming Soon') and Apple are normally quick off the mark with this sorta stuff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 490 ✭✭spidermonkey

i doubt it will be available quicker than o2.
that would undermine them winning the contract, publicity etc to help sell it.

Realise that but Apple still have the right they sell it on the Apple Store but they'll require activation with O2 all the same.

Very true, look at phone pricing / tarriff's for any operator in the UK, the pricing is completely different. Don't get me wrong, it's your right to moan about pricing, but if you feel that stuff is cheaper elsewhere then why not live elsewhere.

Looking at the pricing for the 50 euro tarriff, I actually thought it compared well, the nearest price plan at the moment is active life 250, which gives more minutes but no data.

Personally, I've never wet my pants over the iphone, it's nice but nothing special, I'll considering buying it next time I'm replacing my phone, but offering apple my first born- come on:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Was it not the spokeswoman from O2 UK that was doing the big PR job on it on Matt Cooper tonight?

Interesting opinion from Australia. Do you think it could be applicable here?

errmm wrong me thinks.. One company - Telefónica appear to own both O2 in UK and O2 in Ireland.

Either way I can't see that these prices are competitive at all and it'll just leave the iPhone to a kind of niche market. Love to have gone official but I'm sticking with me €300 US iPhone and €19 Vodafone contract I reckon! :)

Not exactly, Telefonica owns MMO2 which owns the various O2 networks, but all the networks operate as separate companies in their respective countries. Imagine ordering a pint of Guinness in the pub and being served a shot of Cuervo tequila. They are both made by Diageo so whats the difference?

Sweet deal ! Where is this pub ?! :D

I like the way France do things. Forcing the device to be available on any network. If the aussies succeed at this it could cascade down to all markets I hope. It's unfair that O2 dictate the terms rather than the consumer, which imo is how it should be.

Also the news above about Apple buying the 3G chips from Infineon is encouraging. Might wait till then before splashing out.

As for the N95. I know 2 people who sold theirs within a week of buying them. Both said the device suffered poor battery life and was over complicated for non-techie types. I personally thought the thing was too light. It felt very fragile compared to say the N73 - but that's another days moaning :(

I think that a similar ruling should be put in in Ireland, but seen as the government won't hassle the telecoms industry I can't see it changing soon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 535 ✭✭✭Dorsanty

How much is le iphone when unlocked? Didn't t-mobile have to sell it unlocked too and then priced it at €999.

Can a french one unlocked simply have it's language changed?
I'm off to the states this summer and need to finalise my shopping list. iPhone or iPod Touch, I just can't make up my mind.
