every now and again I get shin splints in the same spot.

Can anyone recommend a cure or a way of preventing it?

I try not to run on the road and run on grass instead.

Would cycling with shin splints make it worse?

    thanks

    im plagued by them.
as far2gud said, propper runners is very important.
lots of stuff i've read on the net talks about the R.I.C.E recovery method:
    rest, ice, compression, and elevation.

Don't try to run through the pain, i tried that when i started training last summer, it put me back months because they just got worse.
Rest is really the best thing imho.

one website i read said that stuff like cycling and swimming while recovering is good as it helps build up fitness and can help loose weight (being overweight can be a contributory factor to shin splints )

Hi, I got these last year basically I rested for 2 weeks (cycled instead), got fitted for new runners and got a sports therapist to 'rub' them out I haven't had them since. I would say your runners are probably the main factor.

One thing I do, which I'm not saying is gospel but seems to work for me is the following.

Stand with your back against the wall, feet together, feet about 6 to 10 inches from the wall.
Raise your toes and hold for 10 seconds
    Repeat 10 times.

I don't do this all the time, really only if I can feel my shins after a run. I'll keep at it for a few days and it generally clears up.

If you're training and you can feel them getting worse, rest is the best option

I was also told that warm bath helps these also, but not after a run . Not sure how true this issue, but when i had a problem i went to my physio and sorted out footware, always best to get a pro's advise.

No medical advice, as per Charter.

As a general rule it's not a good idea to dredge up threads that are almost 2 years old either
