im just cluching at straws here .. but do u have alot of programes running in the background or in the taskbar
This would usually affect the RAM but in some cases it has known to overload the CPU

The other major problem is Vista :D

i thought it was windows media centre which i have stopped running on startup but no difference.

as i said above post i don't know much about technical stuff (i'm learning slowly), which programmes to get rid off - do i go into msconfig

I don't normally suggest this but as it's a dell and it's free under warranty, why not ring tech support? They'll do some step-by step troubleshoooting with you which is harder on forums.

Yea use Dell's support a little annoying but should get the job done. Other wise use task manager and see from there what is eating you CPU, and start killing one by one untill it starts to act normally, taking note of what process you kill, as it might not be just one process but a combination. This should show up the problem, but not always. at least post a screen shot of the task manager, click on the process tab and double click on cpu untill it shows the highest figure.

thanks for all your replies. will try task manager first and if no success will try dell then

Process explorer (Free download from MS) is better for this than task manager.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/cb56073f-62a3-4ed8-9dd6-40c84cb9e2f5.aspx

By holding the mouse over rundll32 processes, it will tell you the underlying process.

But offhand I'd guess that McAfee is responsible based on recent dells that I've looked at. Recent versions just don't seem to work properly. There might be some setting which has it running checks too often or something, but I never found it. So replacing with Nod/AVG/ almost any other AV sorted the issue quickly.
