Hi im 19, full license and am going to buy a car for about 3k at easter. I was looking around at the skodas VW's etc from the early 00's but i said why not get something with a bit more personality. It must be

    Cheapish to tax
    Insurable (1.6l ish)
Reliable, (i need to drive to and from dublin once a week, from wexford)
    Cool!

What do you guys say? I was looking at mid 80's capris and the fastback 323f... Id like power steering too

Only the 2.8 capris had power steering. Insurance on older stuff might be a problem at your age, you should try for a quote on a 1.6 capri to see what comes back, even the early 323F is even getting scarce nowadays...

What about something like this ?

    http://www.danielcurnock.co.uk/forsale/view_pd.php?id=273

    http://www.danielcurnock.co.uk/forsale/view_pd.php?id=259

both of these are gti types so probably not good for your insurance but they both came in smaller engine sizes too and you can always add a GTi kit.

    VW gets my vote !

Check this out for value though,

There's great value in Saabs. The 900/93 is a classic at this stage. Look at this http://www.carzone.ie/used-cars/Saab/9-3/2.0L+1OWNER+NCT0809+Tax0408/905414/

I have a Saab Turbo which is amazing. The normally aspirated engines are fairly good to. They have tons of standard features like traction controll.

Yeah Saabs are heading classic ways, esp the 9000, also the Volvo 480ES, 340/360, early 80's Honda CRX's, Civics, and my own personal fave, the Opel Senator/ Omega!!!

    Aside from engine size, Saab 90/99/900 are great and again the engine is too big but I'd look for a Subaru SVX or Isuzu Piazza turbo but sticking to smaller engined cars;

    Skoda Rapid Coupe
    Alfasud Sprint
    Fiat X1/9
    Hyundai SCoupe
    Saab 96

As far as i know these were based on the vauxhall chevette, i know that sounds odd but i think its true,i doubt very much youd find one in this country! It would make a good donor car for my chevette though:D

Volkswagen Corrado 1.8 (8v or 16v)was not built in huge numbers (<100,000 I think) they have bit of a Cult following and lots of spare parts about. I had one as a junior doctor and loved it- you should be able to pick one up for about 3k although prices seem to be going up.

How about a BMW E30? You should get a nice one for 3 grand. 316i would be perfect.

There was one for sale in Sligo/North Mayo are a few months ago, think it might have been on Ebay or Carzone etc,

    1999 Seat Ibiza 1.6?

It's a good solid nippy little car with VW mechanicals and could become a classic as the bodies are solid enough to resist serious rust...

or maybe a MkII VW polo? Some nice variants of this model about such as the GT40 - but they're like hen's teeth...

    But check this out!

This is a bit left field but

It's very practical - hatchback, small engine so cheap to run, will fit 4 people in for a short hop and (if looked after) it'll be as reliable as any other classic. You'll also be able to sell it again fairly easily as there is always a market for well priced MGs.

Give First Ireland a call and ask to be put through to their classic car section and explain your situation and ask what they can do. You won't want a full classic policy as you won't gather a NCB on it but they might be able to do something.

The one im looking at now is a 316 touring, anything to look out for? Mileage a major concern? Any 1.6l E30's seem to return about €1600 for insurance though 3rd party f&t!!! :O. By the way lads 20+yr old cars are out, cant get any sort of a quote until i'm 25

At 22 I had no problem getting insured on a 1986 Renault 9, I was (and still am) with Hibernian, they don't seem to mind the year, as long as the car has a valid NCT. I'd say give them a shout about insuring an older car.

Hibernian quoted me 3k on a peugeout 306 1.4 19 full license 1yr NCB, my current policy with FBD is 1200 provisional, 18 albeit on a 1.0 corsa. Thiefs!
