I have had two hard drives die on me. The first was a Maxtor and the second was Western Digital.

Where do I go from here?

What make is the most reliable in a 500gb sata drive?

(I have had two hard drives die ),How were you adding removing them or was it just during normal use,you need to know why before the next or you could be wasting money, say what you were doing when they died. I have an samsung 250gb sata hdd very fast. Had loads of problems when it was slave to my old maxtor 30 gb ide drive, lost operating system, non detetion in windows xp,MAX 30GB IS now in my old athlon pc and both are flying. So if itS a pc prob find that before you waste youre money will help if I can .

I have not had too many problems with either make. But I would not suggest samsung, I have used 3 in different machines, and one has already been returned to Komplett, after in failed twice in a year, and I have bought another just before that and it already has failed and I have had to reload windows. Hitachi seem to be quite reliable

    Thank you for the responses.

I have decided to go with Seagate (the 5 year warranty is appealing).

I have ordered 2 x 500gb Barracuda ES and a Thecus N2050 DAS enclosure from Scan.co.uk. I intend to implement a raid 1 solution. I figure the chances of 2 Seagate enterprise drives going down at the same time is pretty slim.

My Western Digital is going back to Komplett (RMA received). I managed to get it to come back after unplugging it for 12 hours with the enclosure open, so I got my files off it. It died again within 24 hours. I think it may be an overheating problem within the enclosure (it's a My Book Pro) but I am not hearing good things about the newer WD drives.

Seagate and Samsung are good reliable drives :), Maxtors are quite poor reputation, I've also seen many WD's fail aswell, I have 4 samsungs + 1 seagate in my current system, not a problem with any!

Just to let you know, the 5 year warrenty does not cover the lost data if the drives go kaboom. Personally i prefere Samsung drives, but thats only because one has never died on me ( yet )
