Using iMac/Airport with Irish Broadband

I'm currently running irish broadband's ripwave plus on my home pc and it's working ok (living in a ground floor apartment so the signal isn't amazing).
I ordered a new imac a couple of days ago and it comes pre-installed with airport. I also have a wii and want to try and get that hooked up as well.
Anybody know what the best way to go about it is? Someone suggested a router but then someone else said to me that if my signal wasn't great that
running it through the router would prob make the signal even worse...

    Any ideas appreciated...

In theory, WLAN should not influence your Ripwave speeds, but I did find that when I ran my WLAN on 2.4 GHz 802.11g (Apple Airport Express and iMac) the speeds were about 10% lower than when I used an ethernet cable direct to my DSL modem.

When I changed to an Apple Airport Extreme Base Station and a newer iMac (like yours), I used a 5 GHz 802.11n WLAN setup and then the speeds were the same on WLAN and Ethernet.

I doubt that the Wii works on 802.11n, so you may have to use g anyway... I'd check if there are any known issues with the AEBS and the Wii, and if not, I'd get one, as it's the most reliable and if you are having troubles with your WLAN, you can be sure that it's not because the iMac doesn't like your WLAN router (this is an issue with many Netgear ones).

My Wii works with the Airport extreme base station no problem.
