This has probably been asked before but anyway, I’m trying to use www.ros.ie, revenue’s online service. I registered and they sent me a letter with my pin on it. The letter basically says "here’s your pin, keep it safe. For more information go to www.revenue.ie"

On the ROS website it says the following:
    Step 1
    Created Account
You have created a standard account successfully.
    Step 2
    Verify Details
You are required to upgrade to a secure account. To monitor the status of your verification process, go to 'My Account' after logging in and check your Service Request Inbox.
    Step 3
    Activate Account
This is the final step in this registration process. If you have successfully verified and authenticated with the Dept of Social and Family Affairs (Client Identity Service Unit), an activation code and instructions will be issued to you automatically in the post.
Once you have followed these instructions and activated your secure account, you will be able to gain access to this service. Please contact Customer Support if you require assistance.

My problem here is that the letter I was sent says absolutely nothing about what I should do to verify my account and I can’t find anywhere on the site to do it. The site keeps directing me to the letter and the letter directs me to the site. Does anyone know where I should enter the pin?

Also, I’m hoping that this will become clearer once I’ve registered but I’m trying to claim emergency tax back and the only thing I can find about it on the site is a link to www.citizensinformation.ie explaining what emergency tax is and how to get a P45. Will it become clearer or is the tax office trying to melt my brain? How do I claim it back?

i rang the main tax office number and its not working and i was on hold so long with the ros helpline that i now have to claim back the tax just to pay the phone bill

lol- it's a joke of a system alright.

You are not on ROS. You are on reachservices. You need to go to verify your details with social services and then they will send you out a reachservices pin which you need to activate ROS online and THEN you need your Revenue Pin. Stupid eh- welcome to the public service.

You need to go to my account and click on verify details, fill out the form, send and wait for up to ten days for your reach service pin in the post.

"To monitor the status of your verification process, go to 'My Account' after logging in and check your Service Request Inbox."

    Have you checked this?

Go to www.reachservices.ie and log in with your username and password.

Click on "PAYE Online" to go to the ros portal. You'll be prompted for your PIN. That's it.

it brings me to "You are here:Home->Access Denied"

and brings up the page i quoted above. no pin asked for

how do i verify my details with social services? is that not what i did when i entered all my details and i got posted a pin?

when i go to my account there's no "verify details" option. it says at the top that i'm currently awaiting verification, which i assume means its waiting for me to enter my pin

This shows you havn't verified- i.e. filled out the form yet. You prob filled out the ROS request but not the reach services request. Duality of forms, stupid? Yes- welcome to Ireland.

Did you get a ROS Pin or Reachservices Pin? The clue is look at the envelope.
I'm guessing you got a ROS Pin.

its at home so i can't check right now. as i posted above, it doesn't say verify details anywhere on the page and i'm pretty sure i've already done that. it says i'm currently awaiting verification and says i should check my service inbox for an update. the message in the service inbox says:
Your request for a match of your personal details is ongoing, but will most likely be successful. If there is a further clarification required, CIS (Client Identity Services) will be in contact, otherwise your activation code will be issued shortly by post.

    History Status:
    22/02/2008 (09:56)

You have requested to have your personal details matched against your Public Services Identity. If successful, you will receive an activation code in the post.

since i got the code i thought it was safe to assume i was successful?

That's what I'd guess too. There's a reason for the dual system having been implemented which I won't elaborate on here.

i'm confused. when i click the login button on ros.ie i'm redirected to reachservices.ie. if its a ros pin, what do i do with it?

edit: and why would i be sent a ros pin when i entered my details on reachservices?

Yes Reachservices is designed somewhat as a portal service, meant to offer you a variety of services once you log in. The login is to access this service portal - not PAYE itself (as such). Reach then authenticates you and forwards you on to the PAYE login screen where you enter your PPSN and Revenue PIN.

PAYE PINs are being sent out currently with many Revenue documents, including P60s I believe. You should be able to find it.

If you make a change in your PAYE profile then you'll need the PAYE PIN again to verify your submitted change. You should not need the Reach login/username again except when you login for the first time.

but it doesn't seem to be doing that. all it does is tell me to read a letter that doesn't say anything

when you say PAYE pin do you mean a ROS pin or a reachservices pin or is this a third pin? and is a revenue pin the same as a PAYE pin?

since i can't find anywhere to enter any pin i really don't want a third one entering the equation or a fourth for that matter

there's some activity in the system. i got an email saying my details are now verified and now when i log in it's asking me for a 12 digit activation code.

of course i haven't yet received this activation code. should i assume that whoever sent the email also sent out the code so it won't arrive for a few days?

my worry is that the site says the code will expire "shortly". to me, shortly is a lot sooner than the irish postal service operates. i'd hate to be in a situation where i have to do the whole thing again because the post is slow

as i understand it, this is the sign up process:
    1. go to www.ros.ie

    2. it redirects you to www.reachservices.ie

    3. you sign up, giving your details and a username and password

    5. they set your account status to "awaiting verification" and tell you you'll be getting an activation code in the post when it's verified.

    4. they send you out a pin in the post which is not your activation code and is currently of no use to you.

    6. two weeks later, you get an email telling you that your details are verified and you can now enter your activation code, which will expire "shortly".

    7. a few days later (maybe), you receive your activation code. at this time you're hoping that it has not expired in the meantime

    8. you enter the code and then are asked for the pin you received a few weeks ago

    problems with this system:

    1. it tells you to register on www.ros.ie when you actually register on a different site. the reason for two sites is unclear and telling you to register on the wrong site is misleading

    2. they send a confidential pin to an address that has not been verified as your address

    3. it is not made clear that this pin is not your activation code and that it is currently useless to you. it is also not clear WHY they send you a pin that is currently useless to you.

    4. the letter the pin comes with directs you to a third site for more information, www.revenue.ie. there is no relevant information on this site and the pin cannot be used on that site

    5. why can the person who sends you your pin not also verify your details and send your activation code? why is it done by someone else weeks later?

    6. they should not send an email telling people that they can now enter their activation code when they have not yet received this code. people should be told that in the letter the code comes with. they should also not tell people the code will "expire shortly" and they should "enter it now" when they haven't received it yet

    7. what is the purpose of having both a pin and an activation code? could they not just verify my details, send me out the pin and let me use that to activate the account? should they not verify my details before sending a pin to some random address?

Well without the activation code you can't do anything anyway, so the PIN the Revenue sent you is useless without it. The activation code is for Reach Services, not ros.ie. You only need the activation code once, to verify your account on reach Services (reachservices.ie) and you can then shred it. Mine took a good week or more to arrive if that's any help.

After that you log on to reachservices.ie using your user id and password, and then log on to ros.ie using your PIN. If you go directly to ros.ie and click the Login button you'll be redirected to reachervices.ie as well for the login. The thing is that access to ros.ie is managed through Reach Services which manages access to services for a number of government agencies, not just the Revenue. See it as a sort of Government Services Portal or something.

oh i know how it works now (assuming this activation code arrives). i'm just pointing out that its a pointlessly complicated and confusing system.

and if its all done through reachservices.ie, they should tell you to register on that site. in a better system it wouldn't matter but the whole thing is so confusing that i thought i might have been wrong to register there and was looking around for a place to register on the site that i was told to register on. it told me that i should enter a pin that i currently have no place to enter so i was left searching www.ros.ie, www.reachservices.ie and www.revenue.ie for somewhere to enter it
