Does anybody have any tips for getting an interview with a big investment bank in London? I'm doing business and law in UCD and should get a first, also, have decent C.V and am quite social. Unfortunately, I am not doing a internship this year as I am doing a J1. Thank You.

    Who does your daddy know?

Thats what a lot of big banking/investment jobs boil down to. You have got to realise that business degrees are ten a penny these days.

don't know if thats the situation in london, a friend's brother is a trader with morgan stanley and has little or no connections. Also i'm doing a law and business degree in UCD, I'm not sure if thats any help, but its certainly not just a business degree!!!

bullshiiit. the investment banks have immense graduate recruitment testing. likely 3-5 stages where they weed out anyone who isn't very intelligent and suitable for the job.

who yur daddy knows will at best get you into the first round, then you have to pass the testing, and then it may come into play at a very late stage - but only the top ppl will get to that late stage

    Hey..

    i would say either
    a) get on a grad scheme (for example, I worked [as a software guy on contract] for reuters... they're not quite Investment Bank but they're in the financial market space.. they have a cool graduate program where you can work in any part of the business and if u have a couple of years with them u could easily walk into M+A in Goldman Sachs or whatever.. its quite hard to get into but if you have your first and you are confident, should be no prob...

    b) do a postgrad in IT, learn some market stuff plus some tech stuff and u can work for whomever the hell you want!

If you're going to a major US city e.g NY or Chicago for your J1 u could consider looking for an internship over there although you'll probably need to get your skates on if you're going this summer and you might only get paid buttons.

Another option is to do a masters in the area and look to an investment bank for support when you're doing the research element. This will show your strong interest in the area and a masters will give you another string to your bow when going into the job market. Another factor to consider here is that the london job market is weakening at the moment. The big banks have laid off a lot of people since xmas and maybe 1 or 2 years from now after completing a masters the market will be a bit better.
