I know he's no longer strictly a standup but what do ye think of Jim Carrey.
Personally i think he's a very funny guy especially when it comes to physical stuff/impressions and just general messing.

As for his films i think some of the Ace Ventura stuff in particular is side-splittingly funny.

So what do ye think- love him or hate him.

The guy is a master over-actor. Its just the serious acting bit that he sucks at.
    Number 23 anyone?

Never has someone on the internet been so misinformed. Go see Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, he's amazing in it.

I love Jim Carrey, just a genuinely funny guy.

Forgot to mention Man On The Moon, what a great performance.
People are too quick to jump on Number23 and say 'Carrey can't do serious', forgetting that one poor film doesn't make a bad actor. If that were the case where would poor aul Nic Cage be?

Jim Carrey is a man whose ability to irritate has no equal.

So in answer to the original question, I hate him.

Movies go from extremely good to nails against the blackboard stuff but when he is ina vehicle like ace ventura he is an absolute legend.

Incidentally just saw a picture of him in the back of the Indo today with his latest squeeze, Jenny McCarthy.

In the picture as well was his daughter who looks like she's in her late teens at least.
I had no idea he had a daughter that age- the man looks so young himself?

BTW the guy seems to have gone through his fair share of hot women- IIRC he was married to Lauren Holly, was with Renee Zellwegger for a while and now Jenny McCarthy.

    Oi.. :)
    Renee's hot.
Well i think she's cute anyway.
Seriously though the last time she was on Jonathon Ross (a few weeks ago IIRC) she was stunning.
    Back OT.

Are you kidding me? The guy over-acts completely confusingly in the Truman Show, which starts as some Carrey vehicle and putters along with his weirdness and then turns into something else alltogether and Ed Harris gets a stupid hat and then I turned it off.
Eternal Sunshine is a great movie, but thats a particularly muted performance and he still adds his comedy gawkiness to parts which just completely didnt work.
Isnt that a Kauffman film? I mean come on. They could have cast a monkey in that role and that film would still have been cool.

Wouldn't be at all suprised if one day Jim Carrey turned out to be Andy Kauffman for real.

    *koff* Charlie Kauffman (Eternal Sunshine)
    Not Andy Kaufman (MOTM)
Easy to get that one confused!

Cable Guy is the funniest film I have ever seen. A complete work of genius. A dark comedy, layered upon a satire, layerd upon a wacky off the wall one.

Jim Carrey is nothing short of genius - although some of his films don't always his talents.

He does have some good films alright. I'd like to see him do a standup show now though, wonder what it would be like.

Gees, I didn't think this pole would be so one-sided in it's results! He's obviously a popular guy!

Jim Carey has so many funny things about him to like

From his early and funny Stand Up Routine

to his Break Through Comedy TV Series "In Living Color"

    Ace Ventura
    The Mask
    Dumb and Dumber
    The Cable Guy
Man on the Moon (one of my all time favorites)
    Bruce Almighty
    Liar Liar
The Truman Show (I have watched this many times)
    Me Myself and Irene
    Eternal Sunshine

I think as time passes he will be remembered as one of the great entertainers of our time

I disagree. some of his stand up is gold. The 'being Canadian' routine is pure class as is his 'observational comedy' stuff.

Just watching him on Letterman from the other night and he's f*cking brilliant. Letterman is w*nk in general but Carrey has made me leave on the show for more than five minutes. He's been brilliant.

He should have an oscar for 'The Grinch'. He was terrific.

In 'Eternal Sunshine...' I thought he played the role perfectly. I think it was a stroke of genius to cast him in that role. His mild-mannered, repressed character is the antethisis of his roles in Ace Ventura, Dumb and Dumber etc.

Also the standup is pretty good

Its amazing how the Oscars continue to snub him. he didn't even get a nomination for eternal Sunshine. I believe Kate Winslet won the Oscar for her performance in the same film.

edit: nope, she just got nominated.

    Equal parts tragedy and comedy.

I have to say I'm a big big fan of Jim Carey. He's soooooooooo funny! But like you I think his funniest film is Cable Guy!

Maybe we have a weird sence of humour but each time I watch it, I heartily lol!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,746 ✭✭✭✭Galvasean

The Cable Guy is such an underrated film. Panned by the critics when it came out, yet when you watch it in retrospect its actually really good. A bit out there, but that's when Carrey is at his best IMO.
