    Hi folks

    I ask this as humbly as is possible. I have been researching Canon DSLR's recently. But I am getting confused and can't seem to get the overall big picture into my head.

    Could someone do a general round up for us beginners of the basic entry level and advanced novice level etc Canons. I am coming across 350D's, 400D's, 450D's, the 40D, 50D, 20D etc.

    Are they split into logical families ? (i.e. the 400 range or the 50 range ?)
    What does each range cater for ?
    What price range for each range ?

    I realize this request may pi55 some people off but I feel it could be helpful as there are so many snippets of info on Canon's but no overview.

    Thanks in advance if anyone can help, no probs whatsoever if you can't.

    In both Canon and Nikon cameras are split into logical ranges:

    Canon:
    xxxD = beginner
    xxD = semi-pro
    xD = pro
    e.g. 350D is a budget camera, 450D is a better budget camera, 5D is a professional camera, 40D is a better semi-pro camera than the 20D etc. etc.

    Nikon:
    Dxx = budget
    Dxxx = semi-pro
    Dx = pro
    e.g. D60 is a better (or at least newer) budget camera than the D40, D300 is a great semi-pro camera and the D3 is king (over the D2 and D1).

    Olympus:
    Exxx = budget
    Ex = semi/pro

    I'm not sure about Samsung, Pentax or Sony.

    Of course you will run into problems when comparing old and new - is the 20D better than the 400D? Should I buy a D2h instead of the D300? Just depends on what your needs are really.

    Almost. Canon don't actually refer to the 5D as a "Professional" camera and the 5D doesn't have the weather sealing of its more expensive brothers. I would put the 5D in the category of the Professional Amateur or the Amateur Professional (heard that somewhere!).

    I think what Canon did with the 5D is try and open up a new market for thoese people that were very serious about photography but couldn't stretch (or justify) the top end models.

    Well I was debating that and probably should have used the 1D Mark III as the best example of the xD professional camera but in my (limited) knowledge of Canon cameras it would seem that the full frame 5D is a class higher than say the 20D (and the rumoured 7D will be in a higher class than the 40D I'm guessing).
