Keeping a laptop dvd drive region free?

Got a new laptop recently and like my old pc, it says I can change regions 5 times.

Is there any way or programs I could use to keep it region free, as I tend to get some dvd's sent from Oz from time to time.

I did have a multi-region player but that dies a slow death a while ago

There is a software that does exactly what you are looking for. I can't remember what it's called though. I'll try and see if I can find out though.

Apparently watching them through vlc player will keep the drive region free. There are other programs that do it but you have to pay for them.

If you find out the manufacturer of your dvd drive you can see if you can find a custom firmware for it that will allow it to be region free, The software I used to use was Anydvd.

    Yup just use vlc.
The drive on my laptop is set to region 2 and using vlc it plays region 1 discs perfectly.. even when they won't play in things like wmp.

VLC will play any region DVD, well at least it does for me. It will give the 5 plays thing on my friend's brand new Vostro and my brother's M1330. It works fine for me on my mac and my Acer laptop so I'm not sure what the story is with it.

+1 For the AnyDVD software from Slysoft, works great and is pretty much hassle free.

I'll give that a try tomorrow night.

I was using media centre on vista, but as i said, I also got the 5 plays on my old xp pc
