Amendment 32 of the Corbett Report on the Lisbon Treaty -

Undertakes to respect the outcome of the referendum in Ireland.
    Results:

    129 in favour

    499 Against

    33 Abstentions

More can be read on it here and here.

Regardless of whether you support or object to the EU Constitution/Lisbon Treaty, I'd like to know what people think of the European Union effectively saying that our opinions don't matter and that they won't respect the outcome of the referendum?

If we vote No to this treaty are we to be given it again?

It might be time to pull out of the EU. I think its usefulness has passed.

I'm not sure what weight that EU parliment vote has.

The treaty still has to be ratified by all member states and as far as I'm aware the EU parliment at least at the moment has no power to ignore the outcome of the Irish or any other country's decision, whether that decision was made by referendum or not.

If we do reject it theyll just keep sending it back to us over and over until it passes, like little old Nice. Still, reject it.

If the EU Parliament had voted to pass that amendment, it would have been the same as saying that they had a choice in the matter. They don't have any such choice, which is why the amendment was voted down. An amendment not to respect the Irish referendum would be voted down as well, for the same reasons. The amendment is a piece of student political posturing.

You cant expect that Ireland in effect would be able to hold to ransom the new leglisation for the rest of the EU.

My only concern is that i beleive we are the only nation that took it to vote. If all other nations had a referendum would the result be as unanimous?

Yep, is there something alien about that? This is the sort of stuff we will have to get used to in the next few years, the continued erosion of our basic right to democracy. Next we'll see tax harmonisation and who will be laughing then? Maybe it's time we did pull out for the good of the nation.

    Europe is a democracy.

How is it a democracy when the EU have clearly stated that they will discard the views of the nation in the event of a No result?

Not much of a democracy. The likes of Ireland will always loose out when important issues are put to a vote. Can't see why important treaties cannot be put to the people, voted upon and implemented on a nation by nation basis until there is an agreement. The EU / soverign governments should not have the power to just co-opt a treaty into power.

Because even if one is very stupid indeed, one still cannot make not voting for something the same as voting not to do something...particularly something it is not within your powers to decide on anyway. Mind you, you're certainly getting there.

    What a load.

Mr. Nice Guy, go somewhere else if you want to post misleading posts like the above.

If anyone here wants to continue the debate on the treaty in a rational way then please do in the thread which has been around for quite a while.
