    Yo

I've got a few videos in divx format that I'd like to transfer onto a dvd and view them using my PS3. I think I need to convert the divx files into another format (small files so won't take long) but I ain't 100% on what format that is.

Also, what's the difference between the + and the - with the rewritable discs? Will the PS3 play rewritable ones?

    Thanks guys.

+ - will only apply to your burner if it can burn + - or both all dvd writers no do both it will have to be one from the start not to.

updated ps3 will play divx but some divx and xvid don't comply to standards these won't try using a usb stick with the files in a root folder called VIDEO to see if they run,

if they do there by the book divx

if not they may play but not the whole way and show higher bitrate

you will have to convert them to another format use h246 for the video with mp4 container may be larger than origional as soom converters won't let you lower the bitrate below a set level
"super" converter will so try that

after there converted put them on dvd ,i don't think they need to be in a VIDEO folder for dvd

I strongly recommend this programme for what you need. Its free and it can even upscale the videos to 720p native format.Check it out

on the conversation of Divx and Xvid support on the PS3 what exactly does it support? i have loads of videos and about half of them work and half dont. i can never tell if it will work until i get home and try and play it. its a pain to be honest

Copyright-protected files or files that were encoded by using DivX 3.11 cannot be played. - Files that are 2GB or more in size cannot be played.

Xvid is not the same as divX they are very similar

the option the encoder use will govern if it will play

    ALL DIVX WILL WORK
SOME XVID WILL WORK SOME WILL NOT.

I've converted a divx file so that it plays on my PS3 and it was okay for the first 30 minutes or so but then it began stuttering quite a bit until it became pretty impossible to watch. Any ideas on why this is happening or how to fix it?

    Slight contradiction there...:p

    As for the OP;
It's a fairly hit and miss affair as has already been said, you're better off just trying to burn them to a dvd and see if they work. not sure if the PS3 will recognise files that end with the .divx extention, so you may need to rename them to .avi.
DVD +/- shouldn't be an issue at least, it's the format of the videos that you need to be worried about
