Quick question - removing adhesive ?

    Need to change the reg plates on my car. Current ones are stuck on with adhesive pads. Want to remove all (well most anyway) traces of the existing adhesive before sticking the new plates on. Any suggestions as to what to use ? Would something like tar remover do the trick ?
