ipod touch, touch screen not working right

Hey I got an Ipod touch off ebay a while ago and was very happy with it as I got it cheap. But now some of the touch screen does not work(small strip on the right side. Very annoying as I can't type the letter p on the keyboard and some apps are now unusable.

Is this a common problem and can it be fixed?
I don't have much of the documentation as I got it on Ebay.
    What are my options

    Thanks.

You can always get apple to fix it if you register the serial number with them....

    Oh I didn't know that, cool. :)
Do I need proof of purchase? Like I said I got it on ebay.

Ok, I was able to register it on the apple site.
What now? I have never had an apple product before so I am unsure of what to do.

    The apple site says

Our records indicate that your product is covered under Apple's Limited Warranty which is estimated to expire on 13 Oct 2008.

    So looks good.
Do I now just go to an Apple Authorized Service Provider to get it repaired?

Yep, same thing happened me just before Christmas. I bought a 16GB Touch on ebay - after the wait it arrived - with a dead strip at the bottom of the screen. Couldn't even click on the "Music" button at the bottom of the screen.

Eventually found that i could register it - then dropped it to an authorised apple dealer who sent it off for repair/replacement. Now - just beware, cos they firstly told me that it had been damaged (forced) at the bottom where you plug in the synch cable. I hadn't even got it long enough to do that and argued my point strenuously. They sent it off for repair/replacement (told me to possibly expect the same response from Apple), had my new replacement from the authorised dealer 2 days later!

Best of luck with it - let us know how you go.

@ Paddy_Foowler: just wondering what shop you brought it to cause I asked about getting an iPod fixed in one of the Retailers and they said that they only look at ones which they sold.

I think it has to be a Apple Authorized Service Provider. Which you can find on the apple site.
Loads of shops in my town sell ipods but I have to go to the nearest city to get it fixed.

You can use the Web Self Service to set up service yourself the same way phoning Apple or taking it to an AASP will.
