Some questions on Primary Teaching

Hi, I am currently thinking of doing primary teaching - possibly in the UK.

    I just have some questions.

On the GTTR form - are the A levels the same as the leaving or junior? Ditto for the GCSE's? If the GCSE = Leaving and I dont have Science for the leaving (just ordinary level physics and a D2 at that) does this disqualify me from the UK?

Do you get paid for primary teaching in the UK? If so, how much? If you were eligible for the HEA/VEC council grants in Ireland, would you be in the UK too?

Is it too late to apply to the GTTR now (as most closing dates were december last year) - I was told that there were late offers, called clearings?

So should I chance applying now for Sept 08 start?

I have a business degree, so what would be the best PGCE colleges to appy for, considering Liverpool Hope, for example, insist on your degree being 50% of their nat. curr.?

I would be willing to go anywhere in the UK for a sept. 08 start..

    Thanks for your help.

    Confused.

A levels are the same a leaving cert, gcse's are the same as junior cert.
i'd imagine itstoolate to apply now. i did a pgce in wales a few yrs ago. i applied in nov and had interviews in Feb. then places were offered based on interviews. id imagine late places would only be filled by those who has attended for interviews. (the colleges always interview you and often test u on the main curriculum subjects). colleges vary hugely on their acceptance procedures!
my college was reasonably easy to get into s they lov the work ethic of the irish teachers. just had a short interview and i got in!
at the time (and i think this still stands) there was a 6000 pound grant given to those on a PGCE teacher training course to cover your accomoation and living costs.
My yr was great and i actually came back with money!!!
    good luck with it all

    Hey thanks for the reply!

GTTR closes 30th June but most of the "good" colleges seem to be filled with places. There are question marks over other colleges, running SCITT courses (its like the PGCE, but not recognised here yet).

What was the name of the college you went to?

Did you find work easy to get when you came back?

    Thanks!

i went to trinity college in carmarthen in south wales. a difficult and busy course but its only for 9mths!!! i chose this college as it was recommended to me by principals here in ireland. apparantly it has a good rep among school principals. another college friends went to is aberyswth in mid wales. more awkward to get too but overall seemed to be less pressured a course.
i got a job straght away when i came back on a temporary basis and am still in that school now, permanently, 6 yrs later. thats not to say the job situation will be the sam when u go looking!!! principals certainly dont seem to be put off employing those who trained abroad. i had been told initially they might, bu its so common now hey prob dont think twice, they are just ususally happy that u are qualified!
you will hav to do irish exams hen u get back bu they can be done over 5 yrs.
    good luck with it all.
