Question about purchasing new receiver

I know absolutely nothing about satellites and so I would appreciate it if you guys could help me out.
My dad had a satellite dish connected to a bluestar receiver to view foreign channels.However, the receiver has stopped working and hes wondering whether connecting any make of receiver to the dish will work?Also,could you guys please recommend shops in Dublin for buying receivers?

most boxes will work but to fully answer your question, you need to tell us more info.

Do you know what satellite the dish is pointed at ?
If not, name some channels he used to be able to get.

I dont know where it was pointing but he used to always watch middle eastern channels like sahar tv,al jazeera,abu dhabi sports etc etc

Sahar is on Hotbird 8 at 13e and Abu Dhabi is on Badr 3 at 26. My guess is that it may be a motorised dish?

There can be many reasons for it not working.

Satellite receivers are fairly reliable, you should first make sure it is totally dead rather than just it or the dish being in need of configuration. For example, the motor might be broken or the dish may be mis-aligned or maybe you've messed up some settings.

Ive connected the receiver up to the tv with and without the satellite cable to see if the menu page on the receiver even shows up but no luck.So my guess is that the receiver is busted?

Any lights at all on the front of the receiver? Any sign of life? Did you check the fuse in the plug? Some peices of electronic equipment might even have a fuse inside the box on the power supply board. If we knew the make and model, someone might be able to tell you whether there is or not, or maybe give you some idea of where to go next with testing it. Like someone said, receivers are fairly robust, and you should check even the most basic things before you write it off.

The light indicating the time goes on at the front but there is no difference when I press the power button to bring it out of standby with the remote or button on the receiver

almost anything except a sky box will work unless you use a subscription and view card
but any new receive has to be configured in setup menu for correct sattelite.

Does anyone know where I can get a reciever on its own ? anywhere I've looked they only seem to be able to be got with dishes.
