    Right lads

without ranting on too much, last month I got my pay cheque and it was over a grand short of what I expected, got onto HR, and she said I never got paid rent allowance (company paying for relocation) so she said we will pay double next month so i said grand, also she said I was paying tax now (around 400e ish) never paid any tax last year as I was not working.
    anyways,

onto this month cheque, expecting double rent and my 4 weeks pay, I was paid less than last month.? even with the rent and 4 weeks pay...

so I was basically charged around 800e in tax? no idea what is happening here but I got onto the HR lady again and she is to check it out.

Are they screwing around with me or something, I was getting loads more last november/december.

    ta!

Sounds like you're on emergency tax. Get onto the Tax office and they can sort it out.

Emergency tax, can she not give you any more info on the charges? Have you seen your pay slip?

    right lads

dont think its emergency tax, i am working with the company since october, last year was my first work for ages, so i paid just like 100e a month or whatever on tax until december.

but this year I am paying tax thru the nose. last month was over 400e, this month almost 800e...next month..??!

I saw my slip, not a pretty sight!

Double check with the tax office that they have the correct details for you. Also ask for a P21 balancing statement that should tell you if you have overpaid on tax

Did the pay amount before tax go up by the 2K or so (double the rent), but then the tax ate into it?

You may get some reprieve from the tax next month though, and pay less than usual. This has happened to me when i've gotten bonuses, etc which meant my pay one month was exceptionally high but was back to normal the next.

If the tax is annoyingly high, look at starting a PRSA, claiming rent relief, etc, to lower your tax burden.

800 tax for one month would mean (estimate) you were paid about 4K?

I was owned 1k for rent (2x500). I will get onto the hr lady tomorrow about this as almost 800e is ridiculous, I seemed to be taxed very high last month as well but she said i was taxed more due to new tax yr etc. but no idea where they got this figure from.

and no, no where near 4k...!

You would have paid minimal tax last year due to using all your tax credits for just a few payslips.

However this year, you started fresh, and your tax credits should be evenly distributed, meaning that you should be paying the same amount of tax every month.

Look for an online tax calculator (irish version here and get a feel for what you should be paying. You should have received your tax credits cert from the Revenue at this stage (or will shortly) so you'll know what tax credits you're registered for.

I bet you it's emergency tax. On your payslip, what is the tax code?

Iv got a feeling OP you didnt work throughout 2007...untill October\November?

You have a yearly personal credit of X plus your PAYE tax credit....so really all you would have payed would be PRSI + levies.

Now that its 2008,a new tax year, your credits are chopped up into equal portions for the year...

BUT...unless your earning roughly €1100 per week,€800 in PAYE+PRSI seems quite alot. Youd wanna ring the tax office and make sure all your credits are applied. Just remember you have a Personal Tax credit AND a PAYE tax credit.

Do you have the use of a company car???...if so youll be paying B.I.K on the use of it.

Your payslip should detail all the deductions...so study it.

....hang on....I just noticed you said the Company is paying for your rent....how is this done??...are they giving you the money straight to you?,or are they paying it to the landlord? If its going to you its liable for tax...and will be subject to the relavent rate...40% maybe!!

yeh, i said i havent worked till oct last year already.

as for the rent it was tax free last year but being taxed this year but that doesnt explain a whopping 800e of tax, and no im not getting 1k a week either.

at this rate one is better off on the dole and having a few kids.

I think you've missed the posts where we're saying it's emergency tax...

    Okay Legs. Firstly calm down.

Point 1. HR are in the main- not experrts on payroll procedures (that's being very mild) so expecting a HR person to know is a waste of time.

Point 2. Your whole year tax credits for lasy year (minimum of 3,540) would have been applied over your two months artificially reducing your tax bill.

Point 3. It sounds like you are being over-taxed. Get onto PAYROLL not HR and as to speak to someone who knows what's going on.

    thanks for the replys guys

anyway the hr lady got back with a detailed email this arvo and an excel dossier of all my slips since october.

but i am still miffed as i think i was not paid the rent at all this months slip. of 1000e

i had 740e ish taken from my slip. my gross pay for the month inc the rent minus the deduction of 740e did not tally what i got, it was like 1000e short.?

i dont think it is emergency tax at all, i am paying tax on my rent supplement since january but company forgot to pay me to paid me double (rent) for feb but its not showing up in my paycheque, i actually got less this month than last month! (and last month i was paid no rent at all) or else i was paid rent and just taxed like ridiculously for it and ended up with nothing?

got a loan to clear and stuff so not very happy with all this.

    thanks again

    Legs,

check where your tax credits are being allocated. I had a similar problem in January when I discovered that my tax credits had been allocated to an employer that I hadn't work for in 5 years. I had to ring payroll who got me to ring the tax office to sort it out. I was not the only person effected and I think that the tax office have recently changed their computer systems. It's worth checking - I pay a lot more attention to my tax paid now than I used to....
