Clonmany crowned World Champions

The Clonmany Tug of War club from Inishowen have been crowned World Champions after winning the Gold medal in the 640kilo open club championship in Bologna Italy on Thursday last.
They also represented Ireland in the 680 kilo international event on Sunday and won the bronze medal.
The Carndonagh club represented Ireland in the 560kilo international event on Saturday and also won the bronze medal.

The gruelling training schedule over the last 5 months has paid off for the Donegal teams. This included 4 nights of team training, running on the beach and gym work on other nights. Not to mention the weight loss to ensure the strongest team can get into the lighter weight category. For example the 560 kilo bronze medal winning Carndonagh team were weighing around 620kilos at the beginning of the season.

Tug of War does not get the respect and the recognition it deserves but becoming World Champions at the top level at any sport is no mean feat.

    Well done to them.

Does this mean there will be a big crowd waiting for them at Lifford some night when they return? Blocking the bridge. :D

They will returning home tonight I think. There will be a bit of a crowd in Clonamny alright but that will be as good as it gets. As I said, the sport does not get the respect and recognision it deserves.

I heard it mentioned on the RTE News for approximately 10 seconds, if it was a team from Dublin or the East coast they would have got a lot more air time! Congratulations to them all and we are proud of them! "Go on yee good things" as Dustin the Turkey would say.....won't go more into that will I?

It always takes a lot of hard graft to reach the top of a sport, they have done that and deserve much more recognistion than they have got up to now! Congratulations, congratulations, Yipee......

Tight spot Clonmany. Never enjoyed going to play Urris.

    Fair play to them.

Yes, Clonmany are the richest club in Ireland, the site and the clubhouse are in the club's name, they also have a healthy bank balance which is a help when travelling abroad to events.
Tug of War men fund their own travelling unfortunately, even when travelling to represent Ireland.
They build the clubhouse purely by fundraising and through community effort.

The rest of us Tug of War teams train in sheds (facilities vary) which are on someone elses land (usually team member, coach or sponsor)
