I'm looking to buy a laptop as a birthday gift for someone and was hoping for some suggestions on a base model. It would just be used for internet (skype and emails mainly), microsoft office and maybe some multimedia stuff like playing music and watching the odd movie.

I had a quick look over on dell and saw a vostro 1000 for ~€350. Pretty much the most basic model you can get. Would this be good enough for reliable performance of these basic functions? Would there be a significant improvement in performance if I spent another 1-200 euro? Any suggestions welcome...
