Can I just refuse to sell an item?

Just sold an item on ebay, had the shipping prices up for the UK and Ireland, some guy from Greece used ebay.co.uk to buy it. Can I just refuse to sell? I never had any intention of posting to Greece

Did you say in the auction where you would post too, i.e. UK & Ireland, or does it say Europe or Worldwide too? Was the postage stated as seller's standard international postage, or was it specific to UK & Ireland?

Unless you specified UK & Ireland only, then you should sell it to the Greek. However, you can't be forced to sell, so you could decide not too, but you should expect a negative feedback comment for it.

In the add it has -
    Dispatches to
    Ireland, United Kingdom

    Service: Seller's Standard Rate

I assume the guy will give me negetive feedback anyway but I assume im justified in not selling to him from the above ye? (bit clueless as never sold anything before)

First thing I'd do is send the guy the cost to ship to Greece. Maybe he's willing to pay it.

Id say he is but I have a buyer in Dublin so that'd be handier than shipping somewhere I never wanted. Shipping to Greece would involve more hassle cause id have to go to the post office to get a price just to mail the guy

Factor in the extra time and expense in shipping to Greece as well before you give a price to the buyer. If you want, make it unfeasibly large so as to put off the buyer. It's up to you to decide how much to charge, and since you never had a price for Greece in the auction, then it can be anything.

Also, if you do go ahead and sell to him, make sure it's registered post.

Thanks, I just invoiced him for 4 times the cost of registered post. Still a bargain for him anyway, just over half the price of what he'd get it for anywhere else on the web including ebay.

a little bit oftopic, but why do sellers say "only ship to Uk" etc?

as long as you pay the postage costs, whats the problem? you still have to go to the postoffice anyway, so it doesnt really make a difference?

Could be for a lot of reasons. Some buyers are idiots who expect an item posted in UK today to be with them in Australia 2 days later and if it's not then they leave negative feedback for the seller. Paypal won't verify addresses in some countries and some sellers won't ship to non-verified users. Also tracking packages through international mail carriers can sometimes be problematic and difficult to make insurance claims if it comes to that.

If you pay by paypal, some sellers like to be protected and sending an item outside of the UK usually involves the seller taking a risk as paypal remove seller protection.
