Changing the swing of a door

I am changing the swing of one of the doors in our house, and I would like to know the best method for filling the area where the hinges would have been.
Should I try to use wood filler, built up in layers. Or a filler piece of timber, planed down to the level of the surrounding area.
I want the filled area to be invisible, if possible.

    Thanks.
