GAA and Lansdowne Road

Just a small question because I've heard conflicting points on this one.

Will the pitch at Lansdowne Rd. be big enough for GAA events? From what I can gather it was originally suggested that it would (in 2004 or so) but by the time planning when through in 2007 it was no longer the case.

Can anyone say for definite what the case is?

It won't be big enough for both. The site is limited in size already (hence only 50k capacity) and accommodating GAA pitch dimensions would have been infeasible. Not to mention the grief the neighbours would give the IRFU if further events (football/hurling) were scheduled at the stadium.

I still think they should have rotated the stadium 90 degrees, allowing a higher capacity and a larger field size.
I believer it was Lansdowne Rugby club that objected... they would have lost their back playing fields.

In fairness I think there as well off not having it big enough for GAA. The GAA already has a great stadium and has no need for a 50,000 seater stadium in Dublin.

Out of curiosity how is the redevelopment going? Anyone got pics? You'd imagine they should be pretty far along at this stage.

AFAIK it is being rotated 90 degrees, as I can't see how it would fit on the ground without taking Lansdowne RFC's pitch.

    Photos are online here

In any event there was talk of 2 AI Semi Finals being played (one form each code), back when the govenment cash injection was being revealed, you know, a sort of open Croke Park to Foreign Games in reverse.

Funny how that's gone by the wayside............

It looks pretty much the same for last 6 months, they are still doing base steel work and laying foundations so hasn't risen above ground level yet and is not much to look at really!
