Just bought a new Razer Lachesis mouse and if it is plugged in when I try to start up the pc the boot doesnt go past the first screen with the Asus motherboard logo:confused: When I unplug the mouse it goes grand, can plug it back as soon as the loading bar for windows comes up and no problems. Any ideas on what is causing it to do this?

have you looked around the bios menu. i'm guessing its usb? so might be some usb setting you can disable to stop the conflict. are there any errors reported from the bios at boot? sometimes theres a fast boot and slow boot, changing between this might have an effect

Yes it is USB, have had a look round the bios couldnt see anything there that I thought could be causing it. Dont get any error messages either at boot

    Which Asus motherboard?

Usually thtere is a BIOS setting called USB Legacy Support or similar that provides support for USB keyboards and mice in pure DOS and similar environments (eg. boot loader menus). It may also provide support for USB keyboards and mice in the BIOS setup program itself. At a guess, this is enabled in your BIOS but the mini USB driver built into your BIOS is having problems communicating with your new mouse and causing the system to hang during POST (power on self test).

Check if there is a newer firmware available for your motherboard - it may fix this problem.

Alternatively, have another look for something like 'USB Legacy' in the BIOS and see if you can disable it. Keep in mind though... if you have a USB keyboard and you disable it, you will no longer be able to make selections in boot loader menus and you might not be able to get back into BIOS setup. You'll need to use a PS/2 keyboard for those.

I don't see anything like USB Legacy in the screenshots here so it may be permanently enabled.

If the latest BIOS version doesn't fix the problem, try the mouse on another machine and consider reporting the bug to Asus and Razer.

If you're handy with a soldering iron, you could maybe do something with a toggle switch and a USB extension cable to save you plugging/unplugging - switching out the USB power or data lines during POST should do it.
