I'm pretty excited by this , I'm guessing there will be no tv coverage .
Any fighter wanting to do more in the Olympics than make up the numbers will want to have qualified after(or before) this tournament .

    Didnt make the weight apparently...

    anyway from the IABA:
Darren Sutherland and David Oliver Joyce tonight recorded impressive victories in the preliminary rounds of the second last Olympic qualifying tournament for European boxers on a day of mixed fortunes for Ireland in Pescara, Italy.

But John Joe McDonagh, from the Brosna club in Offaly, bowed out of the tournament this afternoon after a 14-4 reversal to Latvian Dmitrijs Sostaks.

And Clonmel heavyweight, Con Sheehan - despite a brave showing on the Adriatic coast - was on the wrong end of a 15-9 decision to Illias Pavlidis from Greece.

Sutherland, of the St Saviours Club in Dublin, was in top form, stopping Scottish middleweight James Quigley on the twenty point rule in round three (23-3).

And St Michael's Athy ace Joyce - who was down twice in the earlier rounds - staged a stunning comeback to see off Armenian Azat Honhannisyan 37-21 in a thrilling featherweight decider.

Joyce and Sutherland will be back in the ring tomorrow along with Irish captain Ken Egan who faces Armenia's Myasnik Sargsyan tomorrow afternoon - John Joe Nevin clashes with Mirsad Ahmeti from Croatia.

Ross Hickey and Cathal McMonagle will also be in action on Tuesday afternoon versus Poland's Krsysztof Szot and
Slovakias Renato Kovac.Conor Ahern and John Joe Joyce will also have their first bouts on Tuesday.

Bantamweights, featherweights, welterweights and middleweights can secure Olympic qualification by reaching their respective finals in Pescara or by reaching the semi finals and winning a box off with the other beaten semi finalists.

All other weight categories must reach their respective finals to book their tickets for the Beijing Olympics. The finals and semi final box-offs will take place on March 1st.

rish middleweight Darren Sutherland will meet England's James Degale in the quarter finals of the Olympic qualifiers tomorrow evening after beating Ramis Baylarov from Azerbaijan 25-16 in Pescara, Italy tonight.

The last eight clash with Degale is a repeat of last Junes EU Championships final at the National Stadium in Dublin which Sutherland, from the St Saviours club in Dublin, won (23-19).

St Michael's Athy light welterweight John Joe Joyce is also through to the quarter finals following a well deserved 20-12 four round victory over Moldovian Vasilii Belous.

But flyweight Conor Ahern and featherweight David Oliver Joyce bowed out of the tournament tonight after losing their last sixteen bouts to Slovakian and English opponents.

Ahern was beaten by Martin Parlagi 26-16, and Joyce was on the wrong end of a 27-19 verdict versus England's Stephen Smith.

England are having some tournament - fair play to them - they are looking like they could have more Olympic qualifiers this year than any year I can remember

    Session 11 - 2.00pm

John Joe Nevin v Detelin Dalakliev (BUL)
Ross Hickey v Miklos Varga (HUN)
Ken Egan v Emil Krastev (BUL)
Cathal McMonagle v Jaroslav Jaksto (LTU)

    Session 13 - 7.00pm

John Joe Joyce v Milan Piperski (SRB)

    Session 13 - 7.00pm

Darren Sutherland v James de Gale (ENG)

Nevin and McMonagle seem to have pulled the short straws and face big names today. Anyone recognise any of the other - I only know de Gale because he gets a bit of local press here in Manchester and he is from north Derbyshire.

I'd be a happy man to see half of those fighters go through today.

    Hi Guys,
How well do you have to do to make olympic qualification? Final? Semi-finals?

depends on the weight in most only the 2 finalists qualify but the beaten semi-finalists in bantam;feather, welter and Middleweight will box against each other for bronze with the winner getting olympic qualification

It's a damn shame this and other tournaments like it are NOT being televised.
Quality action throughout. The boys are a credit and lets hope Sutherland and Nevin and the rest make it through....

I've asked a good few place place for any TV coverage and no luck either. These tournie make good TV, they have the nationalistic Eurovision element to them, they are tied to the Olympics and they have quality boxing - I'm suprised coverage especially when you consider the great coverage the senior national finals got.

Ah well - at least the aiba website is pretty good!

yip, Egan appears to have had a comfortable win and suprise of the day is JJ Nevin coming through to beat a very good boxer 16:15.

Not so good for McMonagle who, as expected, got a bit of a doing and Ross Hickey lost out in a very high scoring bout.

Sutherland out beaten by Englishman James de Gale 23:22 on points. Wonder if there will be excuses after excuses or if will be "taken on the chin"

On a positive note - John Joe Joyce beat the Serbian with a third round stoppage

    Tomorrows semi finals

JJ Nevin v Maksym Tretyak (UKR)
JJ Joyce v Ionut Gheorghe (ROM)
Kenny Egan v Ramazan Magamedau (BLR)

Well done to the three especially Nevin who fought a very tough fighter in the quarters!

Kenny Egan v Ramazan Magamedau (BLR)

Well done to the three especially Nevin who fought a very tough fighter in the quarters!

the semi finals are on friday

joyce has a tough one gheorghe won bronze in athens and gold in the eu championships in dublin last year but i think joyce might just do it

nevin should be full of confidence but Maksym Tretyak competed in athens and got to the Quarterfinal so it wont be easy

dont know anything about kennys apponent but i would love egan to get tru....would love them all to win but if i had to pick one it would be egan i like his style and attitude and was lucky enough to meet him a few times and comes across well

Sutherland loses to the Englishman. That's a revenge win... Hard for Darren.

The others did very well and it's there for the taking....

    Best of luck..
