Netgear Modem/Router DG834N Problem.

    Hi all, I bought a Netgear wireless DG834N modem/ router in order to provide access to a new laptop but my PC just won't recognise it. I can't access the automatic setup from the disc; the screen just flickers a second and disappears. This still happens after disabling Windows firewall and AVG anti-virus. I can't think what other programme could be in conflict. Was on the helpline for an hour yesterday and was finally told the router itself was faulty, so I toddled off to Argos and replaced it, but the new one is behaving exactly the same. At the moment am on the old Eircom Netopia modem, and have Windows XP. When I plug in the new modem the internet and wireless lights come on, but not the PPP link. Any suggestions gratefully received...not much point in ringing the helpline again I think.
