In what ways, as a proud tomtom owner, I'd like to know why you think I bought an inferior product?

The Irish maps on the tomtom are not great compared to the Garmin maps.

Thats more of a debate than fact. All arguements I've seen are spilt more or less 50/50. As for The rest of europe and the Us, TomTom are the clear winners.

I plan on using mine 99% of the time in ireland so garmin is your only man.
Ive heard taxi drivers saying thr tomtom are crap, considering they're using it all the time, id take their word.

Navteq maps are better worldwide, not just in Ireland, if you have a tomtom with Navteq maps, thats a step in the right direction, but some have the teleatlas maps, which just are not as good (they are getting better all the time though)

The garmin will on average save you time on your journey compared to the tomtom. I dont know where you heard tomtom is prefered everywhere but Ireland, In the US they prefer the garmin, not for its maps (although they reccomend it for outside of the us travel) but because it on average will find a quicker route. The tomtom can leave you on the wrong side of the road at your destination, which americans dont like, the garmin wont which is the major difference for the yanks.

    Slightly off topic.
Was wandering through a Sony Shop today and noticed they also sell a range of sat-navs. How do they rate? Garmin still the king?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,909 ✭✭✭✭Wertz

I see pixmania are still milking the sterling/euro exchange rate.

I can get this cheaper from amazon (by about €21 + free UK delivery) even though pixmania's sterling ticket price is lower than amazon's. I can't think of a good excuse for buying it though...

The maps are older on sony ,but the graphics are nicer.

The last sony I had was identical to a becker gps I was using at the time.

Whats the story with US maps? Its not on the list of maps included.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,473 ✭✭✭✭Our man in Havana

Nope. They will cost you £100 stg extra.

To be honest, I drive a lot and the Garmin map of Ireland is not very good. Not to mention route selection. U-turns, going through the same crossing twice, finding the most complicated route...

I am glad to have it (for free), but I rely on map. Garmin is just a third tool to be used (sometimes the arrival times are close enough).

Map, than road signs and the Garmin at the end.

However asking locals is the very best thing I could do :-)

Ouch. I was thinking they'd be a tenner extra or something.

Are they always an added extra (& always as expensive) on all GPS?

For good maps live navteq you will pay alot. Just the way it is.

On the mappy thing between the Garmin and the TomTom, I have had the *luxury* of having used both a garmin (250W) maps of pre Christmas (2007 i think) and a TomTom Navigator 6 bought just weeks ago. My primary use area has been the greater dublin area, Dublin/Meath/Wicklow/Kildare and even though i now own the TomTom, the Garmin was way better in terms of the maps, although i must say the TomTom interface is nicer to work with. So much so that i'm actively awaiting my moment to upgrade (read replace) my TomTom to Garmin.

    Guys,did anyone get this yet?
I ordered it on Feb 26th, and, seeing as it said they had stock I expected it to ship next day.. didn't happen..
Got an email on march 3rd saying "We inform you that your order has just been dispatched :"..
Now, 3 days later, I check the tracking number on the parcelforce site and it still says status: Advised and last tracked at WDM Online.. (This gives me the impression it hasn't even been picked up by the delivery company yet)
And this was sposed to be a birthday present for last saturday nd all.. was hoping to get it this week so I wouldn't be too late..

I'm in exact same boat. Ordered and was initally told it was out of stock. It was despatched on 3 March. And I'm getting the same status on the delivery. I've e-mail parcelforce to try find out more.

I ordered mine around the same time as you and only got it on Tuesday. I rang the helpline and they said it was showing out of stock. I pointed out I got an email saying it was shipped, then another email to say a due to technical difficulties it was delayed. The tracking number just took me to parcelforce and it said something about shipped and with was advised to WDM or someone.

But it did turn up this week so all was well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,849 ✭✭✭Redisle

    Yup, got mine yesterday.
I guess the tracking website wasn't updating or something.
In the Map Info section it says I have City Navigator Europe NT 2008, Thats version 10 isn't it?
Thanks for the find Op, Great deal.

One strange thing though.. This thing tells me that the closest ATM is 200 Miles away!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,070 ✭✭✭ScouseMouse

Mine to. I live in Tallaght and this thing says the nearest atm is dolphins barn or some place. It has let me down already though. Friday afternoon in parkwest, I was looking for oak road. It told me the nearest oak road was in dublin 9 !

Ended up giving up and going home.

If the address your looking for doesn't come up for oak road
Type OAk and search ,it will list all the oak******

Also ,typing in the dublin area code can help a lot.

It's worthwhile getting use to how it displays addresses.
Some spots in Dublin are listed under district names and can be very hard to find if your not use to the search criteria.

I was searching for st patricks villas, down in ringsend, it wont come up, although i can see it on the map when i browse to it, any helpful hints how to find it would be nice.

It also wouldnt show me baggot road the first time i looked for it, would have brought me to baggot lane instead, but searched for it a while later and it found it down off the navan road.

    weird...

I also have a problem with the update, but ill ask in another forum about that, the webupdater wont work

One problem with garmins is the updating ,avoid using the webupdater program .
Download the update and update from your computer yourself.

Whenever I'm stuck finding something ,I'll put in the Dublin area code if I'm in Dublin . Sometimes Saint will be listed as St or Saint

I just put in Dublin 4 ,for the road I type St and searched . Found St Patricks villas:)

Yeah i just tried with "dublin 4" and it found it no bother, i was typing "d4" before,

Ill try find a manual link to the file, and ill avoid the web updater from now on..

    Thanks for your help :D

True price is €154.88 incl vat plus €5.00 for shipping. Still cheap enough at that price.

Is all these prices reductions on the 2xx series because garmin are coming out with a newer model soon, remember reading it somewhere?

It would never dawn on me that a price was advertised ex vat.

Thanks for the correction of price:)
