NTL "FREE Connection"

Organised a new NTL connection for my mother recently.

She's just got her first bill which includes an installation charge of about €50.

The New Customer deals clearly push FREE (their capitalisaion) connection. Was I really dumb to think free connection means free installation? Or is there usually a connection fee as well as an installation fee?

How many connections did she have installed? The main one is installed free of charge, but for any additional outlets it's €50.00 a pop.

She got triple play. 1 TV point installed, but he put the modem in another room as we didn't have a plug board handy and there weren't enough sockets to plug everything in around the first point.

Don't tell me he charged this as a second point and never said anything?

    Have you tried calling them?

Before you call them I would just double check your bill to be on the safe side.

I was entitled to free installation of DVR.

When bill came, there was a €50 charge for connection on one page but this was credited on the second page.

I find these charges ridiculous anyway. In my case all the had to do was swap cable from Pace box to DVR.

Got a look at my mothers bill this afternoon

The offending item is "Installation Charge (Wireless Router)" and it comes to €49.99. Not credited anywhere else on the bill.

There's definitely a lack of clarity around NTL charges. When I tried ordering the DVR by phone, some gimp told me there was a €50 installation fee. I told him I'd get back to him as I was certain it was listed as a free installation on the website (which it was).

I then ordered online, and my order confirmation stated no install fee.

Their support people for the most part are poor. The whole bull**** routine that you have to go through with them any time there's a problem is so annoying. "Plug out the box... etc. etc., I'll send you a signal boost... etc. etc., I'll send out a "technician" etc. etc.".

Can't see the problem there, when a hit to the decoder or a hard reboot often solves a problem like missing channels - wouldn't you rather they go through these troubleshooting steps with the customer first, rather than just having you wait for a service call that mightn't be necessary? I know it's a pain if you're ringing in about a repeat service issue and have gone through it all already.

I'm thinking of getting moving from analogue to digital and getting the DVR. I have analogue at the moment connected to two TVs so I would also want multi room.
    1. Is the digital and DVR one box?
    2. There is a a charge for multi room of €50. Does any one know what this covers? Is it for a second box or is for cabling, which I have in place?
    3. What would my setup be, would I have one box or will I need one for each TV (explaining the multiroom charge)?

Was just looking at the manual on UPC website, so I think I have answered Q1, yes its one box. I have however a new question
    4. Can I have digital downstairs with DVR and just continue with the analogue upstairs as before.
