I've read the FAQ, and I've read the Microsoft document, but I still cannot fix this problem. I have two folders that I've had for holding archive stuff for ages, I have done several re-installs since then.

I can access *some* of the files within these folder, but not all. When I try to copy some of the subfolders, it says "Access is Denied - make sure it is not write protected of the file is not currently in use". Others copy fine.

I've restarted in save mode (I'm on XP Home) and gone into the security and made available to everyone. But still I cannot access it.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

Have you tried changing the owner of the directories and files to an admin account and then adjusting the settings?

i would say go back to safe mode,go as administrator, and continue the security fix
the files may of got rearranged when you have reinstalled the O.S, this happened to me,

    Try this,

    My computer,
    Tools,
    Folder options,
    View tab,
Scroll to bottom and uncheck “use simplified file sharing”,

That gives u the security tab when you properties a folder or file
(i.e. If you right click on a file or folder & choose “Properties” you will see an extra tab called “Security” that wasn’t there before)

When you’re in the security tab click advanced
    Owner tab,
    Highlight your machine,
    Check the replace owner box,
    Apply
    Ok
