fireback that can be open/closed

    Hi folks,

I've started looking around for a fireplace and have a question about firebacks. I seem to recall seeing some a few years ago that had a "flap" to the top that could be opened / closed as desired. I.e. open when the fire is lit to let smoke escape up the flue and closed when the fire wasn't lit to stop warm air escaping up the flue.

    do these work ?
can they be fitted to a standard fireplace or are they designed for particular fireplaces.

    advice / opinions please
