    Hi all,

I've a problem with a new (as in completely empty apart from OS) Vista Home Premium (version 6.0.6000)machine.

    It's a Philips Freevents 12NB5800 laptop.
    2Gb(SODIMM) RAM, 120GB HDD
    Intel Core 2 Duo T7250 2Ghz

Reboot time from clicking Restart to getting to the desktop screen again takes over 7 mins !!

I've disabled some processes in startup but the time taken remains about the same.

Can anyone help as this is not what it was supposed to be like !!

Got the lappy in PCWorld in Derry btw.

Please say that this isn't the best I can expect or else I'll be going back to XP.

btw, when I do a check for updates, there's no sign of SP1. Is it only the people with Ultimate that are getting the option to download it yet?

    Cheers,
    PK.

Not typical with those specs. If it's new and you've got time, try a reinstall. These tips are also really good:

If the problem persists then you got a lemon - return it!

Dude that isnt on at all. Not even for Vista with like half a gig ram. There is something afoot there. Re-install for a start. Im trying to think of what else would cause it. Will get back to you if the fog clears.

Ugh, take it back to the shop. that sounds dodgey. If anything they will get you a replacement because that is honestly ridiculous. Do not accept 'its not broken' for an answer: somethings gone afunk with the setup.

Or (preferably) get a refund and buy your new machine online from an Original Equipment Manufacturer such as Toshiba, Acer, Dell, Asus, or HP*. You save money in cost/vs performance in almost all cases and the OEM warranties and technical support are exactly what the Derry store will use if your machine has a problem - by buying direct you simply cut out the middle man and save money doing so.

Have an HP laptop. Theyre very comfortable to use vs others I've seen; but Dell also has some fierce fancy customer support that I can applaud them for.

    Thanks guys...

I've installed XP Pro on it and it's lightning fast but I can't get drivers for some stuff so I re-installed Vista.
    Same story.

The reason I got it was that it's only a 12" (it's enough for any man! ;)) and any other make with that small a screen was a couple of hundred more.

Could be taking a trip to PCW then !

No logical (pardon the pun) reason why it should be that slow then
